I have a final tone question before i go for it...
I had a really useful bunch of responses to my general question about which Z to go for and all things considered i think a Therapy is for me but there is one kind of tone I'd ideally like it to be able to capture on top of all the other good stuff it'll do...
Only way i can descride it is an amp about to expire tone - there's a track by Chili Peppers (scar tissue on the live at hyde park cd) that has it in spades. But that's the final icing on the cake - if Therapy can do that then the wallet is out!
This is the link - the tone is in the solos towards the end. Hope it's ok to post links...
Of course it could just be down to a silver jubilee being caned to within an inch of its life :-)

Sounds kind of flute-y to me. Pretty characteristic of a fuzz pedal sound... which I think the Therapy could achieve quite well (with a fuzz pedal in front of it, of course).

He has a Mosrite Fuzzrite on his board - that is probably a big part of the sound.

Thats good then - been trying to find out what he used for fuzz, some reckon fuzz factory but if its a fuzzrite theres plenty of clones that'd do that job...
As usual, thanks for the help - I'll be ordering my therapy next week and hunt out a good fuzz - i have a way huge havalina but really dont get on with it so its up for a swap out anyway...
Cheers

The Therapy likes fuzz-witht the amp clean or dirty-I go for Gregg Ginn's blown amp sound, and get it in a very satisfying way.

Reminded me of John McLaughlin on the first Mahavishnu albumn "Inner Mounting Flame".

I did think it sounded Fuzz Factory ish as well....but sense Mike knew it was a Mosserite I figured I'd just say I can get that with a Fuzz Factory. The only thing I don't love about the Fuzz Factory is that it doesn't work with the guitar volume knob very well for a quieter overdrive sound into full fuzz sound like Hendix used his Fuzz Face.

Guys - overwhelmed by the help and advice, what a great board, thank you!
I've dug out an old fuzz that I haven't used for a while (Devi Ever Torns Peaker) and I'll give that a go - if it doesn't do the trick my favourite local guitar shop sell Fredric effects and they do a very highly rated Fuzzrite clone.
I'll check out some of the tracks mentioned too - that tone is so good
Cheers

Settings you ask for? Lol, you have opened up a can of worms man but it's ok, that's what this forum is for. Here is the thing, your probably gonna see a wide array of different Therapy setting choices on here but the truth is, none may be your "old comfortable pair of shoes".
I'll give you where I'm at at the moment for my strats and teles: from right to left, V=10 o'clock, T= 2 oclock, mid = 1 or 2 o'clock, B = 10 o'clock, master = usually around 11 but up or down depending on if it's mic'd or my environment. Don't be scared to juice that mid knob, it's like none other. I actually turn it all the way up on three songs out of the set list.
So basically I set the volume (far right knob) and leave it. I use the master (far left knob) for actual volume levels.
For fuzz I use the Boss Blues Driver and the Paisley Drive, depending on the song. I have NO reason to go on a pedal search because I'm so satasfied. For reverb or ambiance I use the MXR Carbon Copy (always on) and last but not least I use the SP Compressor (always on). Yep, just four pedals.
Now if you need more classic reverb I HIGHLY recommend the Rocket Boing. A guy on this forum recommended it and I bought it. I also loved it, very Fender Deluxe like. I substituted it for the Carbon Copy because I only have a Nano pedal board powered by a Cioks Adam.
I'm sure this is more info than you needed but hopefully it will help.

Put time on the amp. Its simply complex. Give it 90 days or more. Playing this amp is a learning curve as with all of the Z'z I have had. Took me 6 months to get my Z28 and that only had 3 knobs... I almost bailed on this amp until I decided to really get into it and get the sounds out of it. Afer having double digit Z amps, I can cut a few corners but nothing makes up for putting the time in. I did install a Beam Blocker in the new 1-12 I am using and it makes a nice difference..Congrats on the Therapy. Doc makes the best amps out there at any money.

Absolutely get this - it's taken around 8 months to get the best out of my Cornell Plexi. That was brand new though so the speaker needed a good thrashing to get it broken in as well.
Patience is the key and I'm looking forward to getting to know it... I might even call it Patience - all my favourite kit has a name

What setting do you use to vacuum that carpet? That seems challenging.
Cool rig, love the Strat and of course the Red Head.

Cool rig, love the Strat and of course the Red Head. I go old school - it gets a beating outside I'm very proud of the strat - I put it together from some very nice parts. Body was made for me by Eric at Revelator Guitars, neck is from a '62 re issue, pickups are Duncan SSL1's and pots are CTS. I wired it all up, set it up and it plays like butter and sounds incredible. Early indications are that it really likes the Therapy at its 6L6's...

those are just the OCD in me for the photo
Where I've ended up on day 1 is
MV = 9 o'clock B = 11 o'clock M = 1.30 o'clock T = 1.30 o'clock V = 3.00 o'clock
I really like to get the back end going on my amps hence needing a master volume - these are giving me some nice break up but I know there's a ton more tones in there that I need to explore. This is just with my strat straight in, so no pedals. that's to come...
Initial impressions are that it's very unforgiving - I'm an inherently sloppy player, it's my style of playing so I know I'll need to sharpen up a touch and also I can't believe how much clarity the amp has it really does have great pick dynamics even when being driven.
I have a weeks holiday next week and I can't wait to spend a week with it and get to know it better and also experiment with the cab - I have it fully closed at the minute which is a first for me so I think I'll whip out the middle board and see how it goes. I'm running a 112 creamback BTW...

The first thing I noticed about the Therapy was how forgiving it is compared to other Z amps. When I made the jump to Z with a Maz 38, that thing took me to school. Glad I didn't start with a Z28!!!

To be honest that's one of the reasons I went for Therapy - I'd have been mortified with my rubbish playing with a Maz or Z28. Just grabbed another hour with it with no wife or neighbours to worry about and really got the back end going - it really comes alive and does forgive my sloppiness more for sure!!
