I'm needing a recording devise for home practice. Something that I can record a rhythm track and come back and record a solo on top of the rhythm track. Right now I'm having to use my phone to record this and that so that I don't forget what I'm working on. I always just record my electric guitar unplugged on my phone voice recorder and it works just fine (Voice Record Pro) great little app. I'm not looking for something elaborate or expensive...maybe something with a 4 track capability with a built in mic or whatever. Any suggestion on such a devise?

I would recommend Garage Band. It works best if you have a Mac or and IPad.
You can utilize very basic functions or go to the depths of possibilities.

Do you play drums, use a beat machine, or are you wanting the recording device to have beats for you? I can't believe I'm calling it a beat machine ..... And you want just a built in mic? Boss use to make a little digital 4 track that has power or runs on AA, or AAA. About the size of a iPhone....here it is. link

Tks for the replies. The bass player in our group has a Zoom H5...is it possible to use this as an audio interface for my mic, I think it has a phantom power supply for mic. If this would work the only other thing I'd need is another audio interface to plug my guitar into for my purposes...or what about this....

The apogee stuff is top notch. I use the Duet as my interface. Simple to use, and sounds great!

Well duh moment for me for forgetting I even had GarageBand on my mac. I have a 2009 imac 21.5 which was still running Snow Leopard. I went on and upgraded my OS to El'Capitan and downloaded the latest version of GB. Went ahead and got the Apogee One. Haven't had much time to fool around with it altho I did manage to record one little piece....drum loop, rhythm track/lead track...turned out pretty fair. Not being the sharpest pencil in the box at this sort of stuff, I have a long uphill battle learning the interface and doing much more than my little first attempt at recording.
I found that 99% of the pre-installed drum loops are absolutely worthless to me for my needs. I've purchased a couple of drum loop bundles...one jazz drum loops from the LoopLoft and a really good Country drum loop pck from BetaMonkey. My biggest headache is the loop library. I can see no way to organize/manage this clusterF*(k...I need to figure out how to organize my drum loops into specific folders in the loop library for genre/grooves/bpm...all my imported drum loops seem to be just dumped into all the worthless pre-installed loops. So at this point, trying to find a drum groove I need for a particular project is like looking for a needle in the ocean (a haystack would be a serious understatement) ....Ideally I would love to be able to just delete all the worthless loops in the loop library as they are only convoluting my groove search.

Does that version of GarageBand come with the "drummer" app? If it does, that is far from useless. I actually find myself using it more than (the purportedly better) EZDrummer. They are all editable for tempo, beat, drum kit, etc. you can even tell the drummer to "follow" another instrument, to tighten the whole groove up.
You can check by opening a new track, and selecting "drummer" (assuming that's an available choice).

You can also download backing tracks and drop them into Garage Band, then record guitar/vocal tracks over them. Lots of fun. I use the very affordable Apogee jam interface for guitar on my desktop, and then the stock GB guitar rigs, though tone-wise they're barely okay. I tried Amplitube and it's not much better, plus it requires a ton of in-app purchases before you can do much.

So what am I doing wrong here. When I add a drum loop to a project. I click at the right top of the loop and drag it all the way across the screen...my problem is the loop only repeats for about one minute. How do I set the length of time the loop plays. I thought this was how you adjusted the length of the loop, evidently not because I cant drag it any further.

It's been a while, but I am going to jump in to recording some things as well.
I think you need to establish how many bars you are going to use in your tune. So once you save a file you need to set up the parameters for how many bars and stanza your tune will be.
That should help you move forward.

Copy and paste it on the same track for as many times through as you want it to play. Simple.

Or, you can click on the right-most edge of the drum track, and drag it until it's hours long, and solo for days, man!!!!!! (seriously, though, you can make the drum track as long as you want with either method)

Are you tracking the vocals separately or is that live with the guitar track? I have to listen again but are you playing drums or is that a loop track? Good stuff!

Vocals separate. Drum Loops from Beta Monkey Jazz Essentials2...really cool loops they run from 3-12 long. Recorded using live drummers. Their loops are the sh*t. I got their country bundle also...bunch of train beats

What I like about BetaMonkey loops is their realistic live groove sounds and I'm finding that their jazz loops can be used across several musical genre's. I have several blues/country things in the works using the jazz loops. On the soundcloud link, the old country tune "Cold War" I'm using one of their jazz loops...quoted from their site below
"You get the full takes, with 100% live jazz drum tracks lasting from 3-12 minutes in performance length. Due to the nature of this genre, we wanted to go with the live feel and not relegate great playing and phrasing to a collection of one, two, or four bar jazz loops. Each track begins with basic timekeeping and continues to build in complexity and intensity - adding complex syncopations and usable jazz phrasings. It's easy to grab a few bars of the phrases you need or use the tracks "as is" to play along and build improvisational skills".
