I think the best sounding amp/cab combination that I've ever heard, was a Stingray through a Z open back with Blues or Golds. I've never run my Stingray through a ZBest. I thinks its time to hear that combination. But .. I should wait til everyone here wakes up first.

+1 to what Don said.
I love my Stingray through the 2X12 open back/Blues but unlike some I don't like it at all through my Z-Best. I think it loses a lot of the chime and sparkle. I think my ear just wants to hear those Blues in an open back cab with the 'Ray.

Curt, seems to like it a lot.......................for now. LOL I like it a WHOLE lot !! for now.... Seems the Ray prefers multible speakers over singles, that said, the Z Best is the only 2x12 cab I have here, but it slays a single Gold, Single Blue, Weber Blue, etc. Second place of what I have is......a single Greenback Z's and Greenis just 'work'. I think the Z Best works for me as I'm not after the normal Ray thang, I need less chime and more 'grunt', volume from #6 on up = ;D I have a Tone Tubby due tomorrow that I hope will be 'it' for the Ray.

I bet that Tone Tubby is gonna sound nice with the Ray Curt. Did you go for Alnico or Ceramic? By the way, I've got a pair of greens in my Z-Best. Scumback M-55 and M-75. They KILL with the Route 66 ;D

I didn't like my Ray through the ZBest. It almost sounded like the Ray had too much bottom for the cabinet, whereas the MAZ38 head I had was a perfect match with the Zbest. I too prefer my Ray with the 2x12 open back setup. Mine is an Avatar with a Weber 30w Alnico Blue Dog/ Celestion G12H30 setup. I've been liking that for awhile now, but part of me wants to swap an Alnico Silver Bell in place of the G12H30. G.A.S.

Another vote for open back 2x12 with blues
Just A/B'd both cabs, really rings out a bit more with the open back

I've used the 'ray with my open back with Blues, and my open back with Golds, and it is glorious with both.

I would say pretty much all of the Dr. Z line works great with the Z-Best. It's just that in one case, the Stang Ray, the 2x12 open back with Blues just goes way beyond "great".... You have to hear it to understand it. That said, not everyone feels that way. Just almost every single one except Curt.

Don, I still recall the sounds of runnin' your Tele thru a Ray and Z-best at Z-fest - let me say, it was awesome .... 'specially using the neck pickup and hittin' some jazz-y chords ;D Joel p.s. if'n I hadn't bought a Galaxie, I'd for sure get a Stang Ray

I resemble that remark ;D I just don't need that 'Ker-rang" that the Ray/Blues were designed for...BUT, that clean sustain, sparkly top and fat azz bottom of the Ray > Z Best works... swell ;D

I'm gonna have to try my Z-Best with the Ray when it finally gets here. I got a feeling the Scumback greens and Zendrive are gonna be real nice with it.

I have to admit, I have yet to put my Stingray into my Z-Best. But the 'ray is black, and the Z-Best is Red - that's like a negative charge isn't it? Won't there be like a huge ZAPPP! after which the lights will be out for 3/4 of a mile around my basement?

I have to sat that i didnt love my RX thru the Z beast. Was ok, but not near as perfect as thru an open 2x12 with green power. Having said that i took the rx to me brothers this week to do some recording, and he has my old Z beast, it does sound pretty good. Every thing ive put thru that cab sounds great. I have been meaning to try the greenies in the Z beast

Color mismatch is the secret mojo WHAT? And all this time I thought it had something to do with ability or the quality of the amp. I could have had great tone all along by getting mismatched colors? NOW YOU TELL ME!

DISCLAIMER: MISMATCHED TOLEX COLORING ONLY ADDS MOJO TO DR Z AMPLIFIERS< MISMATCHING TOLEX ON SUBSTANDATD AMPLIFIERS MAY CAUSE AN EXPLOSION:
Similar to when Richard Prior mixed two types of milk..then dipped that cookie............

I'll be honest with you, my Ray is the last amp I plug into the zbest.
I enjoy it more with the cab I built for it, I will take a few pics of it and post them.

I just tryed my Ray with a stock Z-Best over the weekend. It's a nice sound, more of a Rock n Roll attitude with the closed back and it looses some chime and swirl. But with a Keeley modded Blues Driver and my Lester it sure did want to breath a bit o' fire!

When I had my Ray I liked it through a pine 1x12 with a ceramic 50 watt Blue Dog the best. It had too much low end through my rear-ported Bogner OS 2x12 cab.
