I just bought Evans Stangray Head and Matching Cab w/Blues Hope to have it sometime this week. Question for those who are using the ray w/Blues...can you get some drive out of it w/the Blues or do you depend on a pedal? I always heard it was a clean machine but I'd think those blues would add some grit to it.

I run my volume at around 1 o'clock, and there is definitely some grit going on there. That's with a Tele bridge pup. I should do a clip of that since it's a question that comes up often, but none of my clips really demonstrate that natural crunch you get right about noon on the volume knob. You're going to dig it! Stick a Zen Drive in front of it and you'll be willing to fight for it.

I have the exact same setup only different. Mine is Red and Black. It gets a good natural drive but for my present gigs it's too loud as it has to be up over 12:30 to get the tubes going. It has a great natural drive up there too. I've been using my AirBrake with it and a KOT for solos. Congratulations on your new rig. You're gonna love it!
PS... I wonder what Evan's next amp will be.... ;D

Oh my, Ronnie C on a 'Ray!...wow ;D, there's gonna be some fine tele pickin' coming out of Rio Vista shortly. Plan on using a boost or OD pedal, Ron.

Ronnie is correct. It will be a new DW drum kit for me. I'll dearly miss the amp, but as I've said before..........I just pretend to play guitar, anyway.
After I make tons and tons of money touring this spring and summer (lol) I'll more than likely rejoin the Z family. Probably go with a Z28 head and ZBest. I just love the 6V6's. I guess that's what I get for growing up with Fender Deluxe's.

Welcome to our club...... Rays are GREAT amps. I've been playing more with my Mazerati lately, but used my Ray today and realized why I like the Ray so much. I'll probably park the Mazerati for a few shows and get the Ray some more stage time.

I'm not a drummer but a friend of mine designs for DW and other companies... Look into the BOA kick drum pedal. Bob Gatzen is an inventor for drum gear and he did lots for Evans, Noble and Cooley (too bad they're gone) and Pacific, DW among others. Check him out on YouTube... Best of luck on being the "Guardian of the Groove"! www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Gatzen&search=Search

Madison, Do you use an Airbrake with yours or just go with pedals? No airbrake, used one for 3 years with a Maz Jr though. I use a single 12" speaker that's no so loud, run into a Keeley comp with dials at noon, Ray volume at 9 to 10 o'clock and I'm good for any size gig. I've done several big outdoor events in the last year, along with tiny club gigs, and volume has been no problem. RC booster and BB for more kick.

This past weekend I used the RC for my blues type tones with the neck pup, and my new Zen Drive for solos that I wanted to take on the Stingray instead of the Mazerati GT. I could easily gig with just the Stingray using the Zen Drive and RC Booster. Very nice sounds all night.

I'd say you want the Airbrake if you want to get the 'ray up to where it starts to crunch, because that is a long ways up on the volume knob, and it's getting awfully loud by then. Figure noon to 1 o'clock to get the 'ray to start crunching. If you just want pristine clean, leave the Airbrake at home and bring your dirt boxes.

I messed with the Ray this morning(hope the neighbors were already awake)...this thang is clean clean clean...loud too...quite a contrast to what I've been hearing with the Ghia. I'm afraid gonna have to put a pedalboard back together before I can gig with it...but I think I will go ahead and use the blues loaded cab with my Ghia tonight

If you have an Airbrake you can get to the grit, otherwise you can only get there at the expense of your ears.

I'm not real crazy about the Ray's grit. It's best to just keep it clean and get your grit from something else. I'm wanting a Z28 too, Ronnie.
