Hey guys - I'm finally ready (after about 2 years of lusting ;D) to pull the trigger on a Stang Ray head and cab. I definitely want a 2x12. I love the Blues, but I am wondering what the result would be using a cab with 2 Golds instead. Will the output be greater? Will I not have enough juice to make the speakers break up? Will I have too much headroom? Will the character of the amp's tone be significantly different than with the blues (I'm hoping not)? The main reason I ask is I would also like to have the cab be available for other heads that may be more than 30 watts, that's really my only interest in considering the Golds. I'd really appreciate any help you all could give me. Yeah I know, less than 20 posts in the year and a half since I became a member. I've done a lot of lurking and have been waiting for a time closer to actually owning a Z before I posted a lot and made an arse of myself.

Welcome to the forum, and feel free to post away!
When I first got my Stingay head, I bought an Avatar 2x12 w/2 Celestion Blues. After they were broken in, the bottom end fell apart when you pushed the amp a bit, and the highs were still 2 edgy(glassy) for me. I pulled one of the Blues, and replaced it with a G12H anniversary model. Definite improvement, but the edgy high end was still there. Replaced the remaining Blue with a Weber Alnico Blue Dog 30watt and have been happy since. The Weber in the 30 watt at least is a stouter version of the Blue, with a little less high end sparkle. I'm thinking about trying a Weber Alnico Silver Bell 30 watt soon. I like the alnico/ceramic mix, but I suspect the Blue Dog/Silver bell combo, would be a great match. Broken in Greenbacks sound fantastic with this amp as well.
Go with the Golds or go with Webers. You'll have a much more flexible cab.
Good luck!

I have a 2x12 with the Alnico Blues that I bought from Dr. Z. And I have a THD 2x12 cab with the Alnico Golds. They are so close - Celestion did a magnificent job on the Golds. The differences are the Golds have more authority on the bottom end, and just ever so slightly less sizzle on the top. Other than that they are identical, especially in that midrange that sounds so cool with the Blues. I paid extra for my 2x12 to get the Blues in there, and I never use that cab because I always use the Golds. I don't think you will be disappointed in them with the 'ray.

Ray and C-Blues are great combo, now with C-Golds,that has a slight edge. The only draw back on Gold is the COST.
