Almost every clip I've heard posted of the Ray is a Tele playing country licks. This totally makes since as that's what BP uses. I was wondering though if anyone could post some of maybe some more rock clips, rhythm or lead, using maybe a humbucking guitar. I'm really curious to hear what this sounds like, and will probably head over to Rock Block and try it out myself sometime, but don't really have time anytime soon.
I'm really looking for an amp that will get a really crisp and tight sound. I think the Ray might be the one to do it, though maybe I haven't messed around with my Maz Jr. enough. I'm just rambling now, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks so much, ~Craig

I didn't have my Alnico Blues yet, so I used a variety of other speaks I had handy. You can listen to all of them over at my gear test pages - check www.gear.strayca.com/stingray.htm for the full set.

That BB clip is pretty smokin! Do you still have the amp? How does it compare to the Mazerati?

That BB clip is pretty smokin! Do you still have the amp? How does it compare to the Mazerati? Yeah, the Stingray is the centerpiece of my gig rig. No matter how I go about things, the Stingray is always a given. It would be hard for me to compare the Mazerati to the Stingray because I never tried the Mazerati with the Alnico Blues. The Stingray is a great sounding amp, but it really comes into its own running through those Alnico Blues. I didn't discover that until the Mazerati was already gone. But they live in the same neighborhood tonewise. To me the biggest difference is on the top end - the Stingray has more of it, and the top end is very musical, whether clean or crunchy.

I'm kinda torn between a Mazerati and Stang Ray. I just like Brad's MOTT tones better, and I understand he was pretty heavy into the Mazerati back then. My only concern is does it have enough low end? I've heard it has less than the Stang. Thx for any additional perspective.

I have more air pumping out of my Stangray than I ever did out of a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier half stack....... I've not played a Mazerati, but I think a Stangray is a bit more versitile with the cut and tone knob vs the Mazerati's tone only (volume too) knob. I also think the Stangray can cover some of the Mazerati's tone...... but not completely since it it does have it's own voice too.

I would agree with that - you can get Mazerati tones from the Stang Ray, but I don't think you can get Stang Ray tones from the Mazerati - or at least not all of them. Having the tone control AND the cut really does the trick, and the Stang Ray's bottom end is HUGE!
But the other thing is, the Mazerati is not in current production. You'd have to find a used one at this point, unless the Doc brings it back.

I played a used Mazerati a while back at my local Z dealer, and to my ears it was a little more Marshally sounding than the StangRay, which is a cool take on a vintage AC30. What really stood out that made the amps sound different was the Mazerati had a super midrange honk mixed with a nice growl as the volume reached higher levels. The StangRay had TONS of high end chime, but it was super smooth with no trace of harshness at all. And the low end on a StangRay is unbelievable. It can really thump you in the chest. Both great amps, just different.

That big ole midrange honk could be the speakers. When I got mine, it had V30's in it. I replaced those with Weber Ceramic Blue Dogs, and the midrange was a lot smoother. The speakers make a gigantic difference on these two amps.

You're exactly right. Alot of people don't realize just how much the speaker plays a role in the overall tone of the amp. The Doc has a great write up about this topic in the Guitar Amp Handbook by Dave Hunter.

How much could I get that Stang Ray tone out of my Maz Jr?

How much could I get that Stang Ray tone out of my Maz Jr? Not at all, IMO. I spent 4 busy years on a Maz Jr, and almost 2 on the Stingray...and know them both well. The Ray has a clean tone unlike any amp I've heard, and as mentioned numerous times above, has a bottom end like no amp I've heard. Both great amps, just different, and that's the way doc wanted it.

No doubt. When it comes to the Stang Ray, you're talking about a world class amp that has no equal.

And that means I'll have to save up the money to get that amp. Oh Dr. Z. When will there be an amp of yours that I don't want?

Thanks man. I really liked those clips. Especially the comparison b/w the Silver and the Blue.
