As a Maz 18 Jr owner, I need to know how loud the Stangray is!
I'm considering a move to the Stangray, but the Maz 18 Jr is about all the volume I need...is the Stangray really that much louder, or is it only noticeable when cranked?
Thanks,
Prudy

Well it's a bit subjective, but the Stang Ray is quite a bit louder in my view. It's a little hard to tell because the Maz Jr. I have access to has a G12H speaker in it, and I'm running my Stingray into a 2x12 with Alnico Blues. The amp itself is just short of twice as powerful as the Maz, but the speakers I'm using give it another doubling compared to the single twelve in the Maz. The speakers are going to be the big factor here. If you play the Stang Ray through the same speakers as your Maz, I'm betting your perception will be that it's a little bit louder. If you get a Stang Ray with the 1x12 Alnico Gold, or the 2x12 Alnico Blues, it's quit a bit louder.

Not THAT much louder, but more clean headroom and in general, more oomph. I recently took both a Maz Jr NR 1x12 and a SR head to an outdoor gig. Nothing was mic'd. After the first set with the Maz Jr, hwr57 (our other guitarist) said he couldn't hear a thing from my side, and I was thinking the great big outdoors was sucking up some sound. I then set the Stingray on the combo and ran the single Greenback into it. Wow!...the rest of the night was a huge difference in power, punch, headroom, snap...what other cliches can I use! ;D
Both great amps, you just need to find what works best for you. My style generally uses a lot of string pulling, popping, and hybrid picking, so a punchy and powerful clean amp responds better for me personally.

Punchy is a great descriptive term for this amp.

HA!
Ok, thanks guys...that gives me a good idea. I'm going to have to try to find one locally and just compare the two, I think.

Hey Steve, Bill - What did he ask? I couldn't hear the question? Huh?...what'd you say Don! This is all funny, I'm facilitating a safety meeting tomorrow morning called...you guessed it, "Hearing Conservation". I'm the perfect guy for this, tinnitus and all like that!

It used to be every time Bill recorded I ended up spending money. Now I have all the same gear as him, but I still don't sound like that. What's up with that?

I guess I could chime in and answer your question instead of just being a smart XXX.
The StangRay is more "full" than loud. My RxES is a louder amp, but the StangRay will flat out shake the walls where the RxES won't. It has to do with the extra low end available in the Ray, but the Ray is still pretty loud. I played an outdoor show the other weekend and still used an attenuator on it. There were times I thought I could bypass it, but when I did it was too loud. That was with the volume on 4 on the Ray. The Ray is a very 3-D and complex sounding amp, which comes across as volume.
I think it was mentioned above and probably the best advice... the speakers make the biggest difference. A 1x12 amp is going to be lower in volume than a 2x12 on an amp pushing the same watts.

Hey Jason, I originally recorded that bt with a Boss COSM effect for convenience, but went back on Tuesday and mic'd up the Stingray and re-did it under the name "U Turn". The set up was: Tele/ Keeley comp/ BB Preamp gain set to 8:00 (barely on) to Stingray Cut 1:00, Tone 1:00, Volume 10:00 (fairly loud), into a single Weber alnico blue dog 50w speaker. For live playing I usually use the bridge pickup all night and turn the tone knob back to 2:00 to fatten things up. Also keep the guitar tone on about 7 or 8. For songs using the neck pickup, I twist the tone knob up to 1:00 and dime the guitar tone knob. Hope this helps

Hard to tell isn't it? It rounds the notes off a bit, the 'Ray can be so clean it's sharp, and by adding a little gain from the BB it softens the attack. Sometimes you want the clean attack, sometimes you want a slight bit of grit. The Keeley also plays a role in getting that tone.

That is the REAL beauty of the BB IMO, I run mine on way low gain as well, 9:00 max, more as a slight compressor/sustainer, like Bill say's "rounds" things off a bit, awesome tool for that.

Punchy is a great descriptive term for this amp. I'd agree if it weren't for my feelings about the word:)
