I've been playing with a RXES now for about 5 months almost exclusively...... I got my Stang Ray on Tuesday and planked around with it at home, but Saturday night I REALLY got to put it trough the ultimate test and play a 4 set night with it. My band plays every style of music - country originals (Keith Urban style) and cover tunes like: Bon Jovi, Blink 182, Poison, Johnny Cash, Dwight Yolkum, SRV, Guns n Roses, Alice in Chains, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Brian Adams, Keith Urban, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Shooter and Waylon Jennings... pretty wide variety.
Here's the set up I used:
Stang Ray head
Z cab with weber 50wt Alnico blue and alnico silver bell
Beam blockers
Weber mass lite attenuator
From "plankin" around with it at home, I was expecting it to be overly bright live, but it was just the opposite as I thought... This was the meatiest amp I've ever played through (and I've palyed ALOT of amps). The cleans on the amp can be as thick as a Mesa Boogie Dual rectifier (but still clean) if you so desier, or they can be as thin as an AM radio and everywhere in between.
The Stang can also takes pedals better than almost any other amp I've ever played (the RX does great too). My Tubescreamers, which I expected to be an over-dose of *mid-range*, sounded thicker with the Stang than with any other amps they've been pushed through since I got them in 1992.
Several people were amazed that the Ray was only 30wts and that I had to use an attenuator with it, but when I bypassed it they seen why I was using the attenuator.
The Beam blockers worked just like I had hoped they would. The table in front of me (which had a couple of guitar players sitting at it) commented on how round sounding my amp sounded and that it wasn't harsh at all...... usually the table in front of me holds their ears at one point in the night when I solo (with any other amps I've had since 2002).
I had the RXES there, but in all fairness I didn't have another attenuator to use with it, so I couldn't turn it up past 2...... So I can't really compare the two back to back. I have another attenuator on it's way, so my next gig I'll get to use both amps at their full potential. But that won't be until August 18th or 25th (after I get back from vacation).
Do you think it'd make my wife mad if I wanted to play a few gigs just so I can hear my amps instead of going on a vacation we've been planning and saving for - for the last 6 months?
