I just replaced my weber 50w bluedog with a celestion gold. I am not at all happy. The Celestion made the amp super bright and brittle sounding. The bottom end has turned to mush. I first took it out to play a gig on Broadway in Nashville. These gigs usually sound bad on stage anyway, so I then tried it in a 1000+ capacity dance hall. I hate it. Is there something I need to do to break this thing in? I am thinking the weber was the way to go. Whom ever designed the gold speakers may need to check their hearing. I even have installed a beam blocker in the amp and it is still terrible.

Wow, I loved mine from the first note! Where are you running your tone and cut controls? And your volume, for that matter..

So surprised to hear this
I just tried a Stingray yesterday with Gold for the first time was extremely impressed with the tone
went to the store to buy the Prescription EX, and left confused and empty handed

I took a Cele Gold out in favor of my tried and true Weber 50w alnico blue dog, but for reasons other than yours. The Gold sounded beautiful, but was too loud and had more bass than I could deal with. Never sounded brittle, but they are known for chime so they can be bright. After much jockeying around, I've decided the Greenback is the best sounding speaker for me...but it takes two for a Stingray.

I may be having a problem with the volume. I am not able to turn up as loud with the gold. I play with a female artist who will hit the roof if my stage volume is too loud. With the blue I could run the volume at about 11 and the tone and cut at 12 o'clock.

I did not care for my Gold either. It had bad cone cry that drove me crazy. I sold it and replaced it with a heritage g12-65 and am now happy.

For me 2x12 C Blues and Ray is the ticket, if I want a 1x12 then C Gold is the choice. There is something magical about C Blues and Ray.

Hmmm...I run my C-Gold with the RxES and with the Ray, never had any problems with it being too bright or harsh. It's got tons of chime like the Blue, but to me sounds thicker overall. Mine just sounds really balanced and perfect with the Z amps I use it with.

I once used that 65 watt celestion ( a vintage one) in a 70's Brian May style vox. That rocked. I may try to pick up a heritage model.

We tried about everything through my 2x12 with Golds at Z-Fest this past weekend - everyone loved them with just about every amp we tried. And you should have heard that old Bassman - oh my! I think Blair must have played that for twenty minutes.

The probem may be that I cannot turn up loud enough. It's just too darn harsh with all of my teles.

You're not alone in this feeling Hunter. I swapped a Maz 38 1x12 combo for a StangRay 1x12, and I'm not sure it was a wise decision. I've found the tone rather brittle too (but it improves a tad if routed through the 2x10 speakers of my Z-28 combo, which are more broken in and a bit more forgiving). I've also had a hard time getting it loud enough to smooth out the tone, and I think that may be part of the problem. On the other hand, I haven't found an overdrive pedal that satisfies either - lots of metallic, harsh high end unless I totally roll off the treble on my guitar. So all in all a bit of a puzzler. Maybe the airbrake attenuator would help, or maybe a tonetubby instead of the Gold? Any advice/suggestions/experience before I drop another small fortune....!? Or maybe it's just not the amp for me. Sometimes that's how it is, you just gotta move on and hope to repair the hole in your bank balance....

I have been pretty happy with the 50 watt weber blue dog for the last year with the 1x12 sting ray. I don't know why I changed. I think I am going back to that. I am pretty picky about sound and the artist I play for is even more picky. Ever since I put the gold in my amp I get some funny looks on stage. The looks are what the h@$%# is that harsh sound. It's strange how the lows and highs jump out of that speaker way ahead of the mids.

It sounds like the Celestion gold may be more suited to a darker amp with lots of mids. I've got a feeling that a single gold and Route 66 might be a good match.

The way I'm going I will end up with a 66' as well before long. This "Z' gas is getting real bad.
You are right about benttops playing and tone with the RXES through a Celestion gold. That's some of the sweetest tones I've heard on this site so far! Absolutely beautiful.

The RXES is more comfortable with a wider variety of speakers if you ask me. But I think the Stang Ray likes the Blues or Golds. But I like it bright! I want that thing to cut! Some folks don't care for that, and that's not wrong, just different. If you think the Golds are too bright for the Stang Ray, try a ceramic Blue Dog - once it breaks in you'll probably love it. I didn't, but I DO like the ceramic Blue Dog with the RXES, and with my SRZ-65, so go figure.

I notice my Gold was getting to sound like that because I kept the amp in the garage and was gigging outside pretty regularly. The Richmond VA. humidity got to it. I remembered seeing posts about this issue so I brought it inside and threw some silica gel packs in it. It's getting better after about a week.
