Last time I played out, I wasn't getting quite the nice sound I have come to expect from the Stingray, but I shurgged it off as a bad night. Last night, there it was again, or maybe I should say there it wasn't. So after the first set I unscrewed the back grille and popped in four new power tubes - YOIKES! There it is! My Stingray is BACK! Glad I happened to be carrying a full set of matched power tubes - saved the night for me!

El84s seem to wear down pretty fast. Good thing they're cheap!

Especially in an amp like the Ray, biased so close to Class A. Lotsa wear and tear on them compared to miuch cooler biasing.

How long had you been playing with the old tubes when you noticed they were wearing down?

How long had you been playing with the old tubes when you noticed they were wearing down? Well shoot, I've had that amp for about a year now. When I got it I was on a pretty hectic schedule of playing about 3 to 5 times a week, but when I quit that band in July it dropped way back to about once or twice a month. So they really did pretty well considering how often Brad Paisley changes his.

I have also heard that with a 'Ray that the power tubes go from "just fine" to "time to replace" in a very short period of time.
There is a scientific reason - something to do the the biasing I think.

Sounds like I should start carrying spares The spares I stuck in that night were just some Mesa tubes I found at a local store. Never thought I'd end up using them, but man when they went, they were gone. Totally convinced me to always have a spare set on hand.

My son has a quad set waiting to replace the stock set, but so far no audible reason to swap. In a way I'm tempted to throw them in just to hear them, but...
They are GT #5's. Fingers crossed. CDN$75 for the set - is that a fair street price these days?
He used to have a Hot Rod DeVille 2x12 and the only time he had to install new power tubes the difference was staggering. But the Stingray sounds perfect for now.
