While I love the 2 Blues with the Stang Ray, I have been missing that ceramic sound a bit. Luckily, I happened across a NOS British made Greenback, and I decided to give it a shot. I stuck it in the cab with a Blue, and we're talking tone city. Plenty of chime from the Blue, and warm early cone breakup from the Greenback. I'm taking it out to a gig tomorrow night so I'll have a report up later.
Are any of you other Stang Ray owners using anything besides alnicos? If so, what was your experience? I'd love to try it with some other ceramic flavors.........maybe a G12H30, or Weber ceramic Blue or Silver. I'm pretty sure that I'll always have at least one alnico when I use a 2x12 because the Stang loves those magnets, but I'm interested in having a variety alnico and ceramic 1x12 cabs available.
BTW, open invitation to anyone willing to make the drive.......if you're ever curious about the Stang Ray and want to try before you buy.......shoot me a message and come demo it. This amp has made a believer out of me. The hype was real.

I want to try the Greenback myself for the same reason, just haven't decided which GM25 type speaker to get first. Considerations are the Weber 1225 or the new Celestion GM 25.
I have tried the Ray with a 40 watt ceramic Tone Tubby and was very pleased with the results. But I would like a speaker available with an earlier breakup for small venues and studio work.
I have an old Phillips Norelco dual cone 25 watt alnico from the late 60's that has early break up and sound purty dang awesome but it's bright as heck and lacks bottom end. I need to spend more time with it and the Ray to find the right combination for the magic. I use to use the Norelco's in a 2x12 closed back Fender BandMaster cab that just sounded awesome. One nite I was playing at a club in Palm Beach (1971 ;D) Ted Nugent walks in and came up to me inbetween songs to find out what I had in the cab. He was very complimentary of the tone.....not the playing..... ;D

Amazing! I have a pair of those same Norelco 12s! Bare metal with a big alnico slug magnet! I believe they were intended for PA or stereo use because of the whizzer cones. I've had them since about 1970 and as far as I know they still work fine. I never considered them for guitar until about 10 years ago I saw an old Gibson Super 400 amp that had a pair of them in it, looked factory to me. I always figured they'd be awesome to recone for guitar but never tried them as they are. I was afraid they might be low wattage but that Gibson amp was about 50 watts so who knows. I'd love to see some specs on them. Back on thread: I use my Ray with a Z 2x10 cab and love it. I have also used it with one of my EVs from the 70s. Sounds really excellent with it too!

Billy....somehow I knew that would catch your eye and that with your 9,000+ amps you were bound to have one ;D. I GOOGLED them recently and found out they are 25 watt speakers and came stock in some of the Traynor amps from the early 70's. They are way cool and fun speakers, I would love to have a pair of em in a 2x12 again. I don't know about gettin one reconed? It would be nice to know if they could be reconed to factory spec. Mine works fine but I am reluctant to use it much for fear of blowing it.
I used it with a Traynor tube amp back in the 70's and then moved on to SRO's exclusively. Since then I have used it in a Fender Tweed Deluxe for a really awesome Blues amp, not much clean headroom tho.

I have one Blue and one EVM12L (blue label) in my cab. Yes, I paired a 15W alnico speaker with a 300w ceramic one, and it's sounds GREAT to me! They blend really well, and the crystal clarity of the EV really compliments the krang of the Blue.
Of course, one side of the cab is about 10# heavier than the other:)

It works great for me across a wide variety of music.

We opened up for Josh Turner last Friday, and I was talking with his guitar player after the show, and he was glowing about what an awesome speaker Ted Weber's version of the Greenback is. Got me thinkin !!!

I think it's the 1225 but I'm not certain. I'll have to ask Ted.
