Hi,
I'm sure this has run around z-talk before, but I'm interested in knowing what people are using for their driver tubes?
I have a regular, non ppimv, all original Remedy. In corvette red . . . and that must be important somehow. I like the push I get without a master volume, especially with my flavorite drive pedals. If I remember correctly, the Remedy used to be spec'd with an LPS driver tube, which I kind of like a lot. Now the amp specs with a Tung Sol. I'm very familiar with Tung Sols in several different amps.
What does everybody like, and why?
Thanks for your time and comments, Swampcooler

I use the PI that came with the amp. The amp sounds great. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Heck, I had an NOS 5751 in the PI spot of the Remedy for a while. Myles Rose (resident tube guru) had strongly suggested it somewhere--can't remember exactly where/when he wrote about it, otherwise I'd provide a link for you, sorry. I thought it was cool... though maybe a little clearer & lower-gain than I wanted. I went back to the stock tube setup, with a Sovtek 12AX7LPS phase inverter, and it rocked.

Personally, if I were going to use a 5751 for a slightly cleaner tone, I'd put it in v1...not the PI. Cleaner preamp, but the power section still gives it's umph.

I remember that post from Myles. I wonder if I can locate it somewhere.

Thanks for the discussion. I have tried all of those options, the 5751 tubes in most positions, and I keep coming back to the LPS. That's why I'm curious about folks who use the Tung Sol. That tube in the driver spot just sounded less focused, a bit more splattery in a distorted way. Perhaps there are some others who will share their thoughts . . .

I've tried both. I think the above description of the Tung-Sol being a bit less "focused" is accurate (in that position), but I think in general they're better suited to V1 or 2 positions in most amps. My Rem is an older non-modded version as well, and the long plates are what works best as the driver tube.

I have used an LPS in several amps for a PI. It's pretty close to perfect there, though it's also great for the input stage. I've also used the TS tube in every pre location on most of my amps and it's been good. Back to what I said in a different thread, not a whole lot of tone modification occurs in the PI- the LPS is a great choice here, if you don't have an overly bright amp or just want the full spectrum of sound to come through. To add to that, the TS is fairly balanced, but may be a little softer on the highs.

It worked in every amp I tried it with. Thanks Doc.
