well it's time for another amp, I sold my Carmen Ghia head & 2 X 10 cab a year or so ago thinking that I would buy a combo But life got in the way and I'm now finally able to purchase. I was thinking I would buy the CG but today I played a 1 X 12 Z28 and man thats a nice amp, Its little more power than the Carmen Ghia but I do have a Brake Lite. So here's the deal, I have a Badcat Cub ll and want something different that takes pedals really well. Would the Z28 Fill the void? The CG was the best Telecaster amp I've ever had, should I hold out for another CG or snag this Z28 for $1200? It's in excellant condition. Thx in advance.

There is a 25th anniversary ghia for sale here (no connection) that you may want to look at. Not too many of them around.

What is different about the 25th anniversary version vs. the regular version?

To Mr Strum: The Z-28 is known as Dr Zs favorite amp. I use it clean with the Monza for dirt. Great fun. I've never played a CG.
To Sam: I believe the 25th anniversary CG has a master volume and a smaller footprint.

That is correct. The 25th Anniversary Ghia has the post phase inverter master volume, is in a nice small cabinet, has a new output transformer with 4,8 and 16 ohm outs. The newer Ghias have the 16 ohm out as well. Lastly the Anniversary Ghia is hand signed and numbered 1-50. Doc only made 50 of them. It's a cool little amp.

I have a Z-28 which I love, but the 25th Anniversary Ghia sounds cool.

Whoa master volume, that's pretty cool cause that Ghia can get loud!

Do you have to play the z28 loud to get a nice tone or is it like the ghia which gives a nice tone at lower volumes?

You need both.
You also need what I would consider the big brothers to these amps, namely the Therapy and the Rati.

Do you have to play the z28 loud to get a nice tone or is it like the ghia which gives a nice tone at lower volumes? Sounds fine at lower volumes. Like the CG, the higher you dial up Volume, the more hair you get in the sound. A key difference is that the Z-28's tone controls are active: above noon they add gain in their respective frequency zones. You'll often see references to 3-3-3 on the '28, which is all knobs at 3 o'clock. That gives a very powerful sound, perhaps a bit like an old Marshall, that you can control with volume on your guitar. But plenty of great tones with lower settings as well. Takes pedals very well too.

I have a z-28 that I have had about a month. The more I play through it, the more I like it. I am using it at church for our Christmas program and it is just a fantastic amp. No brakelight for me--I have volume around 11, treble at 1 and bass around 11 to 12. Running a little clean boost and delay with it. I love how you can work the volume knob on your guitar and get hairy or back off and have cleans. It sound so good at low volume and great at full volume. I have never had a CG, but do not think you could go wrong with the z/28.

I've got the Z-28 sitting beside me, picked it up a couple of hours ago to try it out for a few days. Just like the Ghia this thing loves my pedals, RC Booster, Lovepedal Eternity and my ZVEX Box Of Rock plus delay all sound great. Really like the tone controls as they add so much to the gain. So far I would say this comes as advertised, JTM45 with a Deluxe twist and that's what I want. I am going to hook up the Air Brake Lite tomorrow but I know remember I did that with the CG but never really found a need for it. Great start to the week ?

I had them both. Both great amps. That's a tuff one. But I would be leaning towards the Z28 Maybe because my Ghia was the 1/10 combo? I had the remedy and the Z28 at the same time. I ended up selling the Z28. The giha is such cool amp though. I would go with. 1/12 combo Ghia. Or a Z28 head. 1/12 cab with a alnico cream.

So which one did you go with mrstrum?
I recently got a Z-28 head with 12ax7 phase inverter tube in it. I've been using it with my 1x12 convertible Z cab with Alnico Cream speaker. Wow, this amp is amazing for cleans and responds to pedals beautifully as well. My favorite amp that I own at this point.
The Z28 has me considering selling my Therapy, Carmen Ghia and Maz 38. I'm not in a hurry to be making final decisions yet, but man this amp is fantastic for the kind of tones that I find most useful and inspiring.

I know of a dude in CA looking for a red Therapy.
