Made a VERY nice discovery today. I've temporarily got my old red Maz Jr back hooking a buddy up on some tubes, and was quite surprised at how dang good it sounded running through my Keeley comp/ Keeley BD-2 & RC. So good I'm seriously wondering if he'll sell it back to me since he's not playing much lately. Then I sit the Stingray on top and plug into the Maz's two tens. I was simply left speechless for about 15 minutes! Those speakers have a lot of mileage on them, and are just amazing with the 'Ray. I think billyguitar is the only one using 10's with the 'Ray if I'm not mistaken. Tight, punchy, fast response...and SWEET sounding. Volume-wise as you'd expect, slightly louder than my trusty Z 1x12, but still workable at the volume I'm shooting for. Check out the 'Ray/210 setup if you get the chance.

Not the Stang Ray, which is a pretty clean amp. The Stang is more like an AC-30, or even a fender Twin in terms of headroom.
What you want for heavy stuff is an SRZ-65 (limited availability), a 6545 (which has an SRZ-65 as one of its channels, supposedly), or a Route 66 (not as crunchy, more roar less screech).
If you want anything heavier than vintage Marshall (say, Plexi), then you won't find it in a Z amp. You need one of those Bizkit amps like a Dual Rec or a Marshall Mode Four.

Maybe I should go ahead and build that monster 9x10 cab after all, eh?? Any recommendos on driver choice? A Weber, perhaps? jh

A 9x10 cab? Get a truss! I ordered my Stang Ray with Z's separate 2x10 cab. Z commented himself on what a great sound it is.

Well, I think with thinner ply and lightweight drivers (weber), then It would probably weight about the same as a typical 1960 cab.
I've hefted a lot of 4x10 cabs and they are nice and light with older sytle (jensen like) drivers.
I think the immediacy and snarl of a 10" speaker, and then bottom end provided by 9 drivers would just give the cab a wicked, unprecedently good tone. That, and I can make a 9x10 that's not much larger than a typical 4x12.
A 9x10 cab would be stupid loud, though-- PERFECT!
