Although I love my maz 38 1-12 this new ray is exactly what I was looking for - and needed ;D. My tele's my strats all sound fabulous through it. My Gibson es137c is killer with this amp. I can't stop playing with it. Every new setting I try just sends me off in a new sonic direction. I think I'll sell my ESRx. It just doesn't have the tonal value that my Maz and Ray do. Thanks Z for the new killer amp with plenty of clean headroom. Play on.

Congrats on getting your 'ray! It's the finest sounding clean amp I've ever played, period. I wrote in another thread yesterday how killer my new Route 66 sounds through a Marshall 1936 2x12 cabinet. I eventually plugged the Stingray into it (with a Tone Press), and was completely blown away.
Like you're considering, I sold an RxES after getting it. As cool as the ES was, and as fine as the 66 is, (not to mention the many other Z's I've been blessed to own)...none stand up to the Stingray. It's truly Mike Zaite's ultimate design to date, IMHO!

I went to the NASCAR race up in Michigan today and while I was there I visited the car show. Sitting in one of the spots was a vintage red Stingray. I just stood there and gawked as I stupidly realized the Stingray logo looked exactly like the Stingray logo on my amp. My own little moment there at the race. Thanks Doc. I still get excited everytime I turn that 'Ray on.

AGREED! For various reasons which will be explained in another thread, I ended up playing with my covers band last night with only the Stingray and a 6db clean boost. That's all I needed - the Stingray just sounded gorgeous and our bass player came over after the first set to drool all over me. He was just floored at how great the amp sounded. But he had one complaint: Here we are playing an outdoor concert type setting on an enormous stage, and the Stingray is over ten feet away from the bass player's amp, and he's telling me that it sounds great but it's too loud on the solos. Had the airbrake set at -2 clicks too! The Stingray CUTS THROUGH!

I agree with the praise for the 'Ray- I was totally blown away from the first note also- and I was probably the first customer to get my hands on one! However, I must stick up for the RxES. I put many hours on my other Z's, but I don't think there's any other amp like the RxES. The use of split-load biasing, the position of the EF86 in the circuit, and the Overdose all add up to some incredible tones. I have been lusting after a RxES since I demo'd one back in January and I finally just ordered one. The Stingray sounds like the best "Z" Vox you've ever heard but the RxES has a unique percussiveness and a feel that can't be denied. If you get right down to it the Sting/Stangray is based on a Vox AC30/4 but the RxES is a pretty unique design. The bottom line is I'd hate to have to choose between them!

Hey guys, I just wanted to add a little more praise (slobber) to my newly found tone friend (STANG RAY). I grabbed my john mayer strat tonight, plugged it in and ** what a sound!! I'm not really a mayer fan but it's a very cool guitar. The scooped pickups have a big sound and different than all my other strats. I liked it before but thru the Ray WOW. I'm hoping that later tonight I can try my '54 original LP - on the other hand I may need some musical Viagra 'cause I'm not sure I can take much more in one day. I agree with you pdw the RxES is a great amp with it's own sound but for me the Ray nails it.

I don't think the Ray and RXES compete for the same thing. They're different enough to need both.

The RAY is amazing... it's my main amp and one of (if not the) best amp I've ever played...
that said.... the RX ES is pretty incredible running WITH the RAY.... now if I could just get my band a gig at SHEA STADIUM I'd run em together... ;D ;D
I really need to pair down a few amps and I'm trying to keep at least one of the RX's... but I gotta justify it....

Well, here I go again on the Ray. I just got back from a gig in T-Town Okla. I only took one amp my 2-12 Ray combo ( I usually take a second amp mainly because some rooms have such a different sound and feel, and options are great, plus a back-up has come in handy many times), anyway, it kicked *ss in all regards. It was a great room, large w/ great dynamics, and the Stang Ray provided all the tone and volume needed (7 pieces). Then I got invited to stay another night and play a second gig at another room, a little smaller and much more alive, but w/ a little adjustment the Ray was rippin' again. In fact, most of the other players oohed and awed over the amps beautiful tones. The ones that didn't comment, (most of these players are either friends or acquaintances, a few I didn't know ), wouldn't have payed a compliment on any amp unless it was theirs ( you know how some musicians can be)haha. Come to think of it, thats why I like this cool forum so much. Even a new guy like me can feel welcome and express whatever is on your mind without some nose-in-the-air nit acting like royalty. Never the less I know what a great amp sounds like, IMHO. I have been a tone freak for years. My wife says I've owned every amp out there. Thats not true but I've had so many I can't remember them all. But NONE, have come close to the little combo called Ray.

There're a lot of posts talking about choosing between an Rx or SR. Definitely different. Do whatever you gotta do to get both!

How do the golds sound compared to the Blues. I want to buy a new 2x12, but can't decide between Golds or Blues.

If you want mondo CHIME , Brillant tone, with a prestine presence then get the BLUES. But if you want more THRUST, low end push, more crunch, and want to drive the StangRay with some pedals the GOLDS will hit that spot. DR.Z
