I damn near sold my new blonde with red panel Stang Ray head for all the wrong reasons. About an hour ago I ran a Fender Reverb tank into the effects loop...gorgeous. As it turns out, much of what I wasn't liking was a Holy Grail pedal "gone bad." It was just sapping tone, volume, dynamics and was barely functioning, a shadow of it's former self (it's now languishing in the trash). Reverb is important for the kind of things I want to do with this amp... some reverb drenched tele ala the older Kid Ramos stuff is my target tone. Then I ran my favorite tank, a Kendrick, into the loop. This may well be the finest loop I've ever used with a tube reverb. If ya run it up front, the Kendrick (and the Fender) are a little noisy, but dead quiet in the loop. I ran my Nash tele into this new mix and was floored...this amp has instantly come alive. I must have played Albert Collins' "Frosty" 500 times with the band over the years, but it NEVER sounded this good! I have two open back 2x12 cabs... a nice light Ear Candy cab with Texas Heats that I use with my Fenders and Z-28. And an open backed Avatar 2x12 that matches the Stang Ray. I've gone thru my Celestion Blue phase...nice, but I'm looking for something a little more throaty. Any suggestions are most appreciated. I use Weber P10Q's in my old Bassman and love them, but have never used any of the 12" Weber alnicos.... I also have a blonde Z 1x12 that I would like to use with the Stang Ray... what seems to be the consensus on a nice single 12"? Thanks! And thanks for not buying the SR head! That was too close for comfort.

I have a Fender reissue reverb, I'll have to give it a whirl. The Holy Grail and a couple of delay pedals I tried in the loop cut the volume. The new T-rex reverb pedal is shown with a volume knob in addition to the blend so that one may be able to boost the volume back to unity. If you like some strong mids try a Z 2x10 cab with your ray sometime. I really like mine and even Dr Z himself commented on that being a cool combination after he tried my rig before shipping.

For the most part I use 1 x 12's exclusively as most of the venues and rehearsal studios I end up in are small. You can look at my gear list shown below to see what speakers I am using. I have used others that are not listed like vintage SRO's and Altec Lansings. I still have-em around along with an assortment of EVM 12LS etc. They all have a place and time and I move them around for different projects. I like to throw out the proverbial net, shotgun style if you will and try em all first hand to see what I like. Of course we all cant do that as some of us misguided individuals have other priorities ;D. As I get older and slower I guess I can understand that it's important to put a little money away for a rainy day . Did I get off subject or what, sorry. I especially like the Weber Alnicos but haven't tried his Ceramics yet. I especially like the Tone Tubby Alnicos and Ceramics. I want to try Weber's ceramics and will get around to that soon but I have run out of cabinets to put them in. I read a ton of posts from fellow Z members offering their opinions on this or that. I have acted on those recommendations and pulled the trigger on a lot of gear and I must say, all to my liking. Sight unseen and unheard, that is truly amazing to me. Hope that helped, not sure it did?

stratdev, I've mostly used a single Weber alnico blue dog 50w since my RxES days, and most recently with a Stingray. GREAT speaker for a 1x12 configuration. Keep in mind the alnico compresses and is not as quick as a ceramic. For punchy country bends and releases, etc etc, the alnico reigns supreme...if you're after rapid scale runs and the like you may be better off with a ceramic version.
I stick a Tonker in the cab sometimes, but don't like the result as much as the Weber. Also A/B'd to a Vintage 30 recently with similar results...that is the Weber being the KING.

Hope that helped, not sure it did? Thanks for the info. I've used the twin Tubbies (alnico/ceramic) in my Pro Reverb for years and typically find it appealing with Fender-like amps. I like my Texas Heats with the Z-28 and my old Deluxe Reverb. The SR, to my ear, has this great thick warmth, but paradoxically, has great twang, particularly suited for a tele. I could run a tele into an old Super Reverb and be happy, but the SR has more character, thicker lows and low mids, and that great top end. So I'm kind of leaning toward an alnico for sure, probably a Blue Dog, Silver Bell, or both. I've gone through a brief Celestion Blue phase (2 in a Zbest)...they're nice for sure, but it's not what I want. Perhaps the Webers will provide more "growl" than the Celestion Blues... So we're looking for a growly twang thang

Hey Madison, Glad ya checked in... the base tone on your clip "Beck-ish" is smack-dab in my mental ballpark. I want to get a base clean tone first and think you may have something with the Weber. Typically I like to choose speakers based on their clean sound; between my AC Booster, BB Preamp, Klon, and Zendrive I have lots of boosted/overdriven roads to explore here. Mind you, my stuff with the band is very Delbert-esque...roadhouse blues/R&B, but that Beck-ish tone blows my skirt up. I believe there's a Weber Blue Dog 50 watt alnico in my immediate future

I'm using a 30 watt Alnico Weber Blue dog and LOVE it. I bought it for my 'ray but sold the 'ray before the speaker arrived. It is awesome with the Route 66, and works really well with a Ghia or Z/28. The ceramic version was WAY too bright IMO.

I had the 2 Celestion Blues, then went to 1 Blue/1 G12H30, and now have 1 Weber 30 Watt Alnico BLue Dog/1 G12H30. The Celestions were cool, but they didn't have enough low end or punch for me, and the high end was a bit harsh for my taste especially with the dirt pedals on. The Weber fixed all of that. It has the chime, but is definitely smoother, punchier and stronger than the Celestion. I suspect that the 50watt version would be even more so. I really like the Webers and will be trying an Alnico Silver Bell in the near future!

Here's another vote for the 1x12 cab. I like like the look too, like a shrunken half stack.

I have a 1x12 combo with a weber 50w blue. The guitar tech for Hot Apple Pie took my amp out on a showcase at 12th and Porter in Nashville last week. I called later to see what he thought. He said he had a serious problem and he couldn't get the amp back to me. He wanted to keep it. What a sick amp!
