If your cab says 16 ohms I wouldn't argue with the label, especially if you bought it new. If your cab was 4 ohm and you were running it out of the 16 ohm jack you would lose some volume and tone due to the mismatch. As far as your amp getting "so loud so fast" the impedance doesn't affect that. If you find the volume hard to control try the lo sensitivity input. I know what Benttop's saying about how to read the exact impedance but I've always done the VOM meter reading and it's always worked for me, the speaker's reading on the meter is about 2/3rds of it's actual value. I've never gotten any kind of wild reading but then I haven't done it very often, just to check myself when I've rewired a cabinet. Benttop's right of course, but this rough method has been good enough for what I've done. Well, not only is my cab labelled "16 ohms", but it's wired in series. There's only one lead for each polarity going from the jack to opposite drivers, so it has to be-- right? The only confusing thing is that the other lead on each speaker has TWO wires connecting them to each other. I suspect this is to ensure that there's a load on the amp if you blow a driver, right? Anyway, it works for me. I don't really care what impedance it is, so long as I know what it is for safety and compatibility. My 8 ohm Hot Plate works wonderfully with the setup so far. The Plate is not "optimized" for 16 ohms (bright and deep switches), but I can't really hear a difference, so I just go with it. JH

Hohn, No currant Z 2x12 cab loaded with Blues is 8 OHM. When I started in January to release the StangRay I purchased 260 Celestion Blue speakers. That's right guys 260 of them, with shipping over $36,000 worth of them. This way I could offer a deal on the head cab combo, and lock my price up for the year. BTW I have less then 40 left, thank you guy's very much. All the Blues I bought were 8 OHM, so the cabs were either 16 ohm ( two 8's in series ) or 4 OHM ( two 8's in parallel ). I have found that 2 series connected 15 watt Blues can fail in the StangRay. So I have connected all 2X12's to 4 OHM, that's cab and combo both. On some days I like the sound of two Blues in Series at 16 OHM ALA VOX, but they are just TOO expensive to put in harms way. All StangRay's will be wired for 4 OHM. DR.Z Now I am confused as well. The back of my cab says 8ohm. Should I be plugging into the 8ohm jack or 4ohm jack? Is it possible my cabinet is not labeled correctly? Thanks for any advice. Tommy

Plug a speaker cable into the cabinet. Now take the other end and with an ohm meter, place the red lead on the tip of the cable, and place the black lead on the sleeve. What does it read?
Also Tuna, is your cabinet loaded with 2 blues? Doc previously stated he only purchased 8 ohm Blues. If yours has 2 blues, it either has to be a 16 ohm load (series), or a 4 ohm load (parallel).
If you're uncomfortable with any of the above, just take it back to your music store, and have the tech there clear it up for you.

hey guy earlier in this thread the doc was talking about all of his cabs and combos running in 4 ohm because it might ruin the speakers. I have a stang combo that is in 16 ohm and I was trying to get some feedback on another thread on why my amp has lately been sounding weak and like the speakers just sound like there about to explode and sound very fragile.
Anyways, could my combo be wired in a bad way and need to be changed. And I'm kinda visual in learning but I do have a mazerati and the speaker wiring is different.
I'm guessing one is wired parallel and one is series.
Could someone please tell me which is which
On the stang the positive wire is one 1 speaker and the negative is on the other. then there is a wire conecting the 2 other speaker leads.
On the mazerati the positive and negetive are connected to 1 speaker and then there are positive and negative wires both jumping to the other side.
Which one is Which?
And Doc if I were to change my stang to 4 ohms, Is there a way to buy 1 extra wire to run it differently. Ya know just to keep the amp using the same components and all.
But the biggest thing is, is it ruining my speakers?

That is series wired two 8 ohms equal 16 ohm total.
On the mazerati the positive and negetive are connected to 1 speaker and then there are positive and negative wires both jumping to the other side.
That's Parallel two 8 ohms equal 4 ohm total.

Just E-mail me your address and what color your jumper wire is and I'll send you the other color to make a twisted pair to wire it in Parallel.
But the biggest thing is, is it ruining my speakers? [/quote]
No, not running 16 ohm, all AC-30's run Series 16 ohm. Just a bit safer running them in Parallel.
