What ribbon mics do you guys record with? I've read the 121 vs ksm 313 thread and was wondering if anyone else could share their experiences with ribbon mics. A royer 121 is the only ribbon mic I've heard in person, but from sound files/comparisons I'm intrigued by the beyerdynamic 160. I'd be micing a m12 or z28 thru a 4x10 cab with doc's 10s and celestion golds (likely a close mic on a gold and a room mic). Thanks for any insights in advance.

I have a lot of ribbons at my studio including Royer 121, SF12, RCA 77, RCA 74b, Beyer M-500 and Audio Technica 4080 and 4081.
Most ribbon mics are figure 8 by design. The Beyer M-160 is a hypercardiod super directional like the M-500 that I have. Hypercard ribbons sound great but you miss a lot of what ribbons have to offer without the figure 8 pattern.
With a figure 8 ribbon you really can get great results by finding the best placement of just one mic. It's rare that I'd ever put a ribbon closer than 6 to 9 inches from a speaker. they get more lifelike sounding as you pull them off the grill, Also, by moving the mic away the sound on the back of the microphone that's picking up the room gets more prominent. If the room sound gets too pronounced I put a baffle behind the microphone cutting off the room.
The AT 4081 is a mighty good value. I put it side by side with the Royer 121 and it was very close. I'm happy to have it in my mic cabinet.
