Wow, I hadn't, and I'm glad I did just now. I discovered that all this time I have been liking the sound of the Alnico California I'm playing through right now, and NOT liking the sound of the THD 2x12 I have in my studio. But with the humbuckers, it is exactly the opposite: the Alnico totally compressed on low notes but the THD just RAWKED! Fascinating. I did throw together a quick clip but it was real quick, and doesn't really explore all of the tones available. If I were going to do this right, I would record a bit, adjust the tone a bit, until it was what I was trying to get. But this should give you a bit of an idea assuming you can tolerate a whole song worth of blues wanking! This is my PRS Singlecut straight in to the Stingray which is connected through the Airbrake to the THD 2x12. I stuck a Rode NT1 about 18" in front of the 2x12 cab since there are two different kinds of speakers in there. www.gear.strayca.com/audio/Stingray/StingrayHumbuckers.mp3 (3.6 Megabytes) The standard list of disclaimers apply: Did this before my nap; dog ate my homework; my fingers hurt from last night; too lazy to do it right; the Dixie Chicks are too political; asparagus makes my pee smell weird...

All's I hear is Tele clips! They sound really nice, BTW. I was running my Les Paul w/ standard PAFs thru the 'Ray and thought it sounded a little muddy. So I switched them out with WCR Crossroads (his lowest output PAF) and that helped a ton. The best I can describe it is really 'chewy', but cleans real nice when the guitar volume is rolled off. Probably an awful description, but that's my take.

That sounded real nice, benttop. What was the volume setting?
My McCarty ought to sound pretty good, then. Which pickups are in your Singlecut?

Nice sound Benttop. What speakers are in the THD 2x12? They are a custom THD design and produced for them by Eminence. One is labeled "Vintage" and the other is labeled "Longhorn." To my ears, the Longhorn is more throaty, while the Vintage seems to have more top edge. I don't know how I would compare them to well known speakers though.

I got to play a Stingray at Rocker Guitars in SFO last week. WOW. What an amp. Played it strictly with a PRS Custom 22, almost the same as my main guitar. Stellar tones. I am WAAAY impressed. I didn't get to push it to OD in the shop, but it was the best cleans I've ever heard. Period.

I gave my Ray a workout with my PRS Custom 22 last night. Cranked that mother up & yeah baby, yeah......very inspiring OD on the bridge pup. So much attention has been given to the Ray's "pretty" clean single coils sounds here, that the great cranked sounds on the Ray have been pretty much overlooked. Myself included.

A second wank with the PRS Singlecut into the Stingray. This time I used a Time Machine Boost to push the front end of the Stingray fairly significantly. Listening back, this track reminds me of my ex-aunt who talked so fast and with such short breaks between sentences that she once inhaled so hard she sucked up a barcolounger recliner and still never missed a beat.... PRS Singlecut (Fralin PAF's) > Time Machine Boost > Stingray > Airbrake > THD 2x12 > Rode NT1 > Alesis Studio 32 > Layla (PC) First half: Neck Pup, Second half: Bridge Pup Stingray: Cut: 4 Tone: 3 Volume: 10 Input: Hi Time Machine Boost: Modern: 2:30 o'clock www.gear.strayca.com/audio/Stingray/RockOverBlues.mp3

Thanks Billy and Sultan. It's interesting - I bought the Stingray for doing my clean thing, but it does the medium gain thing pretty well I think. Makes one think on things a bit here... one amp and pedal board vs two amps and A/B switcher. I bet one of those options is easier on my back... ;D

Yeah Man!!! Steve that's tone +++ and great licks to boot. I thing your onto something great, one amp; great cleans and really beautiful nasty meaty overdriven tones. Easier load in and out. Only one of Myles' super model roadies could make it better.

Oh if we're going the "super-model roadie" route, I'm bringing a LOT more gear - like to sit back and watch that show for quite a while you know...

Sounds very nice, Steve. I guess I'd call that a "singing" tone. Did you get your 2x12 Celestion Blues cab yet? Once you do, please let us know how you like it (as if you needed prompting ;D) with the 'Ray.

When I ordered it I calculated that it couldn't show up earlier than mid-June, so I should see it any day I would think. Man...I'm in the exact opposite position. I have a Z-Best loaded with two Blues and an Avatar open back with two Blues. A kid at a local jam hauls in his Dad's old 60's AC30 top boost and was moaning that he needed better speakers. I asked to play his rig and subsequently took those old Vox labeled Blues off his hands for $200 so he could snag the Fanes he wanted. A little dusty, but they had zero cone rot and sound fantastic. I haven't gigged those old ones yet, but gave them an extended "at volume" session here at home. I expected to have them reconed, but they are just fine. But I'm waiting on my Stang Ray head to get here. Based on my experience with the Mazerati head and the Z-Best Blues, this is gonna be a treat. Once they break in (fairly fast with those thin cones) they just scream with any Z I throw at them... Z-28, Route 66, Mazerati... it doesn't matter. I'm amazed at how well the Z-Best really tightens up the bottom on the Blues. I prefer it over the open back for just that reason. Does anyone else have any experience running their Stang Ray into a Blues- loaded Z-Best 2x12 as opposed to the open back cab?

You could sell those old blues for probably $400 each with original cones, maybe more.

You could sell those old blues for probably $400 each with original cones, maybe more. Yeah... I suppose I could, but I'm really enjoying the luxury of two cabs loaded with Blues. I feel so...so...so...decadent I use my Route 66 exclusively with the Z-Best Blues cab. It's a stunning combination. But I'm awaiting my Ray head so I can do a head-up test. My hardest decision at this point is what head/cab combination I should take to the gig. The really amazing thing about Z amps is the realtive ease I can go from the Z-28 into the 4x10 cab and the next night go with the Route 66 or Mazerati into one of the Z-Bests or the Z 2x10. The guys in the band used to flinch when I brought in new gear, but not with the Z's Right now the 2 old Blues in the open back Avatar are hooked up to my Swart Atomic Tone in the basement "tone lab." OK, it's not much of a lab, but it is toneful.... This wait for the Ray is killing me...
