Apologies if you already saw this thread...
No new amp yet, but I'm trying to figure out just how I'm going to arrange the new rig once my Stang gets here.
What I have been doing thus far is:
guitar--> Wah--> EQ-->TS9--> trem--> Mesa Rectifier Recording Preamp-->Line 6 Delay unit-->Peavey 100W head--> Hot Plate-->EVM 12L 1x12.
Now, the Peavey has an FX loop (serial) and time effects in it sounded bad. Of course, the Peavey never really sounded that good anyway. In fact, I noticed a HUGE improvement in tone when I quit sending the Mesa preamp out to the input of the PV, and instead just bypassed the whole preamp of the PV by sending the Mesa output to the PV fx return. Of course, you lose all volume control of the power amp, and it gets LOUD. I can't run the levels up on the Mesa without earsplitting levels coming out.
The Mesa preamp actually has a pretty good clean side, with three modes (clean, fat, "brit" whatever that is). Fat is good for blues, Brit is more AC30 like, and Clean is just much lower gain overall.
The Mesa also has a PARALLEL FX loop with level control. I think this can add some interesting possibilities. I can keep all my time effects on it and mix in as I wish, without sucking the dry tone I like so much.
Now let me come to this issue: How best can I use my Mesa Preamp in conjunction with my new Z? One ongoing challenge is that the Mesa can put out a LOT of signal, easily enough to overpower many inputs if turned up.
-- Do I try to run the Mesa in the Z's loop? Like Z loop send to Mesa input and then Mesa output to Z loop return?
-- Do I run the Mesa in front of the Z, with the Mesa's output going to the Z's front side?
-- If so, which Stang input do I use, 1 or 2? Can I use both at the same time, and if so, what happens? I'm wondering if I can setup and A/B box so one side is direct into Stang Ray, and other side is Mesa into Stang Ray.
I really don't want to part with the Mesa Preamp (aside from the financial loss), as it really does have some good hi-gain tones in it, and sounds a lot better than you might expect at medium and lower gain. Think of it as the ultimate distortion pedal-- with 6 modes, adjustable EQ, parallel loop, solo boost, and a wildly variable amount of gain.
My goal would be to be able to have the Boogie footswitchable in with the rest of typical pedal/Dr. Z setup. I'd love to be able to go into a screaming Boogie-powered lead, and have regular Stang tones for rhythm and such.
Any advice on how to do this is HUGELY appreciated.
Thanks.
Justin
