There's no legitimate reason to do this. If he had one he'd have a real picture. You guys saved someone a lot of grief and money. I hope that guy gets blackballed from Ebay. That's exactly the kind of crap that makes me leary of Ebay and you know they don't want that. The Z police rock! Actually it would be a great sting for the real Police to make the buy and prosecute.

Usually when I see these things on ebay there is zero feedback, NEVER even consider those deals folks, but I saw this yesterday too and he has 100% + feedback, don't recall the # of xactions, but MAYBE, there is a logical reason for the duped photo, can't imagine what, but Maybe.......Just proceed with caution. Has anyone gotten feedback from the seller on their questions?

The seller has a perfect feedback rating... I know we live in a society where we are all quick to judge, but try to communicate with the seller before jumping to conclusions. If the seller doesn't get back with you in a timely fashion, can't provide detailed information, (where amp was purchased/when purchased/pics) and you get the heebie jeebies...don't bid/cancel. Also, see if you can do a secure form of payment...it doesn't have to be paypal. Hey, we would all like a roadtrip to Nashville every once in a while maybe you can meet him there to pickup the amp. maybe our forum friend Jayson Chance would pick it up for you. My 2cents. 6strang Hi 6strang, I just reported a possible fraud. Ebay will investigate before they decide to pull it or not. I still think it was a good idea to report it because you never know. Also like Rcrecelius said someone could have hacked into his account. I still would give the guy the benefit of the doubt but the hacked picture, the pretty inexpensive shipping costs. It would cost a lot more than $40 to ship. Then again the person might not be aware of how much it would cost. Anyway I rather Ebay investigate. Regardless the person is misrepresenting the product by using a photoshopped picture. When an amp is going for $1025, I would want to know if this thing is legit. Hopefully it is just a misunderstanding and he will post or send some pics of the actual amp. Curious to see how this pans out.

I asked for pics this is his exact response...
"Hello, unfortunately I dont have a digital camera (I had to borrow one). I purchased/ordered the amp in January and had to wait almost 3 months for it (because it was back ordered). As soon as I got wind of the new z amp coming out I immediately ordered one (they announced it in early January I believe). Thanks for looking!"
notice he said he borrowed one...to take a picture for fat sound??
GUYS EVEN THE FEEDBACK RATINGS HAVE BEEN SPOOFED BY a SCAM ARTIST!! there are several ways to do it and I've seen a couple.... Trying to give the benifit of the doubt here but this one smells...

I emailed him because the description said payment by money order or cashier's check. The payment section it said Paypal. He responded "Hello, at this time I am unable to accept PayPal. Thanks for looking!"
I think we got a bogie.

Do not give this guy ANY money until this is settled.
Spoke to someone at E-bay (they have a Law Enforcement Line and a Fraud Investigation unit) gave them a link to THIS thread so they'ed have the Pictures posted by Arun of the POSSIBLE original undoctored amp from Fat Sound. and reasons why it MAY be a photoshop or altered/ fake.
Again, I WISH this is a misunderstanding, but at the same time we cannot be too careful.
IF a crime has possibly been comitted then they do have/ keep records, a subpoena then can and will be issued for information regarding that crime by the agency/ agencies having jurisdiction over the crime. If a crime has been committed then I would like to see it investigated and prosecuted. E-bay is VERY involved and extremely cooperative with Law Enforcement as it is in their best interest.

Well, most feedbacks are good indicators and are OK... BUT there are things to look for even with the feedback.... mainly how LONG they've had the account... which is what we all look for, but even then a smart computer guy could probably either hack into and spoof an existing account or possibly falsify it altogether.... who knows what they COULD do... Main thing I guess is to look at the BIG PICTURE not just the Feedback ( he's got 100% feedback so he's OK)... and look to see what they've bought and sold and to who along w/ THEIR feedback. look for OTHER indicators of "is this too good to be true" syndrome... also look how they answer/ respond to your e-mails, questions ( do what Lawyers do...ask him a question you already know the answer to and see how he answers it..), NO PAYPAL= certified funds or bank transfers only... or any of these in combination with a few others and ya start to get a feeling.... and just be careful.... even then, I don't care how careful you are; you can still get burned BUT... I WOULD NOT send certified funds if in doubt ALWAYS use paypal or something secure. I saw a case pesented by the cybercrimes unit that actually happened in our county ( seller of a Violin / fiddle that sold for $10,000) and the buyer was in Australia ( sorry tas... groovergeorge) buyer never receives the fiddle (and there NEVER WAS a fiddle in the first place) if I remember correctly he had done this... you can get a Yahoo E-mail address ( or MANY addresses) easily using fake info... then set-up a fake E-bay account ( or MANY fake E-bay accounts) other than your MAIN one... then sell a bunch of things like pencils or little trinkets not worth much and you could actually have some of your FAKE accounts BUYING from your OTHER FAKE accounts and giving yourself all glowing positive feedback on ALL of the transactions... now most of these will have OLDER TRANSACTIONS where you can't see WHAT they were.theres a BIG warning sign... but if you could see what they were and they were a bunch of cheap crap and then all of a sudden a real expensive piece... I'd be wary. and most of these type scams would have a more recent member date than one as old as the Stingray we're looking at, but you still never know... could be guy's out there could have alot of older accounts floating around and the right sort of SUCKERS with Z-gas that they are just waiting to pull a scam with... identity theft is a possiblity, and what about the ones who have pulled scams and gotten away with it, the ones who have all these negatives and changed their ID's until they no longer have the sunglasses anymore and they don't have the OLD negatives and they retain their original member date with the new ID.. I don't profess to know everything these guy's can do but I'm NOT suprised they do it.... Buyer beware. Jason

one thing that looks funny about his feedback is no recent history. You can not see what type of items he usually buys and sells. Cons usually build up their feedback buying cheap items and then try a sting on a big ticket item.

I see now this guy has listed the serial# for this Ray as #022034 I thought all serial # for the Ray's would start with a Q for this year?

Post by JASON (aka jgleaton) on May 31, 2006 17:04:56 GMT -7
I am trying to convince myself that there is a possibility that the guy actually HAS a Stingray and just doesn't have a camera, used an altered photo to sell it and somehow when questioned about getting MORE photos by several people who could be potential buyers, responded by saying he can't get anymore because he BORROWED a camera and apparently can't get the camera back to take some more pictures that may help him seal the deal and sell an amp worth almost 2,500.00... not to mention he said he basically inferred he TOOK the picture on the auction with the borrowed camera, and that auction picture appears to have been altered from another picture and not actually taken by the seller in the first place?
Hard to sell that to me... not saying anything is possible but.
ONLY thing I can think of is IF I wanted the amp and/ or had already bid on it, I would offer to buy the amp and pay top dollar IF he could take it to the nearest DR Z dealer and I could CALL the dealer 1st to set it up and speak with the DEALER and have them check it out... if he couldn't BORROW a car to take it to the DEALER to have THEM check it out for me or work out some other similar arrangement that would satisfy my need to feel sure there is a real amp here... I just wouldn’t deal with him...
But frankly I wouldn't deal with him anyway after the discrepancies, and the fact that theres no paypal/ certified funds payment option.... may be an explanation but If he's REALLY got a STINGRAY he shouldn't have any trouble selling it, he could even let a dealer sell it for him...
and others have mistaken the Q in the Serial Number for an O.... that actually only makes me think there could actually be an amp... or maybe he's smarter than he is good at photoshop.

If he's reading the Q as an O, the serial number would be correct. Hmmmm, the mystery continues...

I just cancelled all my bids on the Ray' after the guy who claims to own it said he couldn't email me any other pictures as he didn't own a digital camera. Just too risky..........I got burnt once before, totally my fault however, Iguess I am just too trusting. Many thanks to TASWEGIAN and ARUNTANG for your emails.
Karma to you both.

Hi Guys, Arun just made me aware of this thread and the related eBay auction. The photo is clearly a Photoshop job of the head/cab featured on my site. I don't know if the auction is a scam, but i would bid with extreme caution until more is known about the seller. I do know of one Stingray owner who was thinking about selling his combo in these colors. It's possible that this is his auction and he just took liberties with my photo. I'll try and find out. Cheers, Stu

I asked for the serial # and for more pictures. I got the # listed above, and almost word for word, the same response Jason got when he asked for more pictures.
It seems a bit irrelevant to me to keep repeating backorder times, and when and why you ordered the amp, when all that was asked for was more photos!
Has anyone asked the seller, point blank, " does the picture in the listing show the actual amp you are trying to sell?"
If the seller's response is yes, then we know for sure that it is a fraudulent listing.
Also, DR Z has records showing exactly what #34 looks like.
Just thinking out loud!

The guy that sold the Z28 and 4/10 cab down here is now the high bidder. Now I know why he sold the Z28...He wants a Stangray! I did send him a warning email but as yet no reply. I reckon this guy has the amp and didn't have access to a digital camera, so he just did a little photoshop job to get the job done, and has told a little "fib" to cover it. But you never know.

It still smells bad. If a guy is for such a moron that he can't do the auction right then he deserves no bids. If another guy sends money to the first guy for the alleged amp after all of these warning signs have been posted there really is no helping him. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hello to all the Z forumites!
Serial number Q-22034 was originally sent to Fat Sound on 3-21-06 and is a 2x12 Red/Blonde/Tan combo.
As Mike Brady once wisely told Greg...caveat emptor!

Even though this amp looks like it might be legit I wouldn't bid on it because the seller is still being deceptive by stating that he "borrowed" a camera to take the photo. It's clear the image was doctored & not actually taken by the seller. Thats reason enough for me to not trust the seller.

My Best Solution:
Dont Bid unless you can do a local pickup deal... Hopefully somebody will get a great deal on the amp, decide they dont like it, and sell it to me... And if its a scam, they can kick the guys arse
I have a love/hate relationship w/ e-bay; got burnned on a L5 one time that cost me a fortune. In my mind, it is cheaper in the long run to buy a round trip plane ticket, fly out and make the deal on any high dollar items... just my 2 cents.
What ever happend to morals and ethics?
