Hello I've just got a second hand Maz 8 it's just over a year old and has had only bedroom use, there's not a mark on it and I have a 3 month warranty with it but I don't want to send it back if it's an easy fix, the problem is there's a bit of hum with no volume on but sounds ok as you turn it up although it's still there, it's worse in pentode mode than triode, somebody has had the same problem on here and suggested swapping out the V3 tube, mine is a 12AT7 although it looks like the new ones have a 12AU7 my question is which make should I go for to make the amp quieter and should I swap to a 12AU7 plus is it case of removing the old one and fitting the replacement I play at low volume because of where I live but apart from the hum I can see why everybody raves about these amps thanks for your time Ades

Have you tried replacing the EL84? When I first bought mine (used) I replaced all the tubes, but I had an issue with the power amp tube. I had bought a matched pair so I just installed the 2nd one and the issue was gone. No other problems since.
Welcome to the forum!

On checking further it gets worse as you increase the reverb with no guitar plugged in do you think a 12AU7 would help as that's what's in the new ones according to the DRz website and can i do any damage by swapping these out to try them thanks

I like the electro harmonix el84...you might prefer something else in time...I was referring to all tubes though as well.

I will order both now plus the EL84 EH, the dealer said its just over a year old and had little use, I like the amp and reverb just would like it to be as quiet as my cheap Chinese Laney Cub although that has a digital reverb, thanks for your help and guidance and I will let you know how it works out. It wont be that...my peavey is quieter also...the tone of it makes up for it and I would do another reverb if I had the chance...there is a laid backness about them that I prefer to the non/reverb.

The dealer got back in touch said to let him know how I get on with the valve change , so I dont think there will be a problem getting a refund if I want to, but you are right about the tone its the sound Ive been looking for, so we'll see how it goes, the tubes are on order.

Is it the reverb in general? I just picked up a MAZ 8 Studio combo for home practice the other day (love it so much! jeeez, that triode mode!) and noticed it hums a lot more than my near silent MAZ 18 NR 2x10 combo.

my nr is more quiet than reverb model...reverb unit picking up mag/interference?....doc went through this with me.
I ended up putzing with the reverb unit shielding it a little more...meh...maybe a little quieter...the tube choice done by some of us here made bigger difference...

Nothing plugged in and the volume and master at off position and it hums, add volume and reverb and it starts to hiss so maybe a couple of things going on, will see if the new valves make a difference and go from there, will be weekend before i can have a look.

Checking for redplating, switched on tubes glowing orange but V1 V4 V5 not glowing at all as best that i can see shields removed, also is the piece of wood held by 4 screws supposed to come off to make easy access to the valves as mine wont move.

They sometimes get stuck on the amp...you can get it off, just be careful and work it loose. I had the same thing happen with my Therapy. The contact cement that the tolex is put on with is sticking it in place.

Managed it now thanks it was well fixed on. All valves are glowing orange some more than others but none are red plating so just waiting for new tubes to arrive.

Update: New valves fitted and its better overall. More testing and Triode has more hum and very little hiss but Pentode has more hiss then hum more noticeable when moving the cut control from the left position round to the right, if left in the left position there is very little hum or hiss, please can you tell me if this is the same as yours, many thanks

I don't have maz 8...I rarely use my cut above 10...its always been reverb that has made hum more noticeable...starts kickin in about 1:30 position...your going to get hiss from cut control...bottem line ie/presence...hum...never encountered.
If I just sit and listen to my maz reverb model yes its going to have some sumthin...when played?

I don't know if you've tried this , but have you tightened the 4 chassis screws? They are part of the ground path and the amp will hum if they are loose.

Mine just randomly improved... maybe the tubes had to wake up after sitting in the shop for a while! No bother, still nowhere near as silent as the 18 NR, though – which is screaming a LOT louder mind you.
