Bought my amp new, earlier in the year, and I have always kinda had a love/hate relationship with it. I just always kinda seemed like I was twiddling knobs more than I was actually playing and enjoying it. Was always struggle with its brightness, and the overdrive I got from it just didn't always sound real great, perhaps a bit fizzy, splattery, kinda...dunno sorta hard to describe.
So I went thru different speakers, different guitars....again, I good make it sound good, but there was always something I didn't quite like. It just didn't sound nearly as nice as a lot of the videos i'd watched on youtube.
now keep in mind, I bought this amp brand new. I have not changed anything in it. Same original tubes. I"m a home player, but can play at any volume I want. and tend to play on the loud side. Sometimes using a breaklite with it.
soooo....I decided to check the bias setting of the tubes. It was reading 50ma!!!!!!!! And that was from the tube that runs a lil bit colder than the other one.....YIKES!!!! Set the other tube at 33ma, plugged in.....and BOOM....SOUNDS TOTALLY DIFFERNT...for the better!!!!!, but the other tube was running cold about 30ma. Plate voltage was around 464vdc. So I splite the diference and juice the hot one up to about 36....started playing..and didn't like it again. notes weren't crisp or clear, kinda farty on the low end....yuck!!!! Bumped it back down to about 34ma, so the other one would run around 30/31 ma... MUCH BETTER again!!!!!!
Feels like I got a whole new amp now......and i'm really supprized the bias would be THAT far off, coming from the store.....I"m glad I checked it....cause it sounds much better, and I think I might stop twiddling knobs soooo much, and just start enjoying it now....
Anywho....Drz amps are still my favorite....just wanted to tell my experience

Even tho they're a pricey pair, I'd call one of our favorite tube guys and order a pair of matched golden lions. You'll enjoy the ROAR!
KCA Tubes, Tube Store, etc
