I'm a Matchless DC-30 owner and don't get me wrong I think it's a great amp but mine had a mod done to it that I believe has limited it's potential. The last owner clipped the bright cap cuz' he wanted a mellower tone for jazz. Well that's probably one of my beefs with mine is that it's not bright enough sometimes. Gets muddy. I usually have my tone controls on my OD's and distortions set very high to cut through better. I still want to tune this baby up and maybe I'll get more chime and better brights.
Anyhow....I was wondering what the opinions are in comparing the stingray vs a DC-30. They were both based off of a Voxy tone. After all Mark Sampson built the DC-30 after John Jorgenson complained too much about his old Voxes breaking down too much. Mine is a 94 (Mark Sampson era).
I'm seriously thinking about ordering a Stangray based on the reviews and killer sound clips I've heard.

Well I think the Stingray is a great amp, and you couldn't go wrong with it. But why don't you have the mod reversed first? It may be only a $100 job to get your amp put right.
But if you want to replace it, the Stingray is certainly a reasonable contender!

i have not owned a matchless, but I have played old original Voxes.....i used to like the way they smelled...anyway my "Ray can cover that like iceing on a cake....the treble, and i usually have too much as over the years I have lost some HFRQ hearing....so when it sounds right to me, I take it down a notch or two and its about right for everyone else....with my "Ray I can get the treble that I like to hear and its not ice picky and killing the audience....the celestion blues sweeten that up real nice....but I can get that marshall bite on the E...like Seeger in Sunspot Baby...but in a clean way....hard to describe...gotta hear it...toss a pedal in front of it , take some time getting the right one, and it can do it all....great singing distortion, bitey OD, thousand shades of grit...I really like what this amp can do....and what it makes me do...play better with more soul....thats quite remarkable...
