I've listened to the two clips on Dr Z's site. Sounds like a great amp, based on what little I got to hear, as well as what people here have to say about it. But, when I think of a blues amp, I usually think of something with 6L6 or 6V6, or even EL34s; not EL84s. Also, I think of the early Vox tone as a roots rock/modern country sort of thing. Anyone here given the SR a work out playing blues?

Anyone here given the SR a work out playing blues? Yes, blues is ALL I TRY to play... heres a link to my thread on the sounds section.. WARNING the recording is NOT too great... probably long to download as they are whole songs recorded live but it is ALL from EL-84 amps... Half is using My Maz SR and the other half of the time it is the STINGRAY your hearing... You can listen to the " LIVE-instrumental" which is really Freddie Kings "Hideaway" and is the Stingray being played. drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=soundfiles&action=display&thread=1143505861Maybe some others like bentop who has a Stingray and plays blues can give you a better example/ sound sample... hey Buddy whittington uses his MAZ 38 ( which is a 4 el-84 amp) on John Mayalls recordings and also LIVE! and he smokes..great playing and TONE... But please don't think that the STINGRAY can only do the vox thing, cause it can but theres SOOOO much more it can do besides that... and IT CAN DO BLUES!! ;D Jason

I've been planning to lay down some blues licks with the Stingray, but I was hoping my 2x12 would come first. Now you've laid down the gauntlet! Stingray works great for blues - just turn the volume up, and the Airbrake down - that's the ticket!

While the 'ray is the most rewarding amp I've ever used for country bar none, it most definitely will handle blues...but then I'm a believer of "it's all in the fingers", or at least a good part of it.
Tonight I'll be playing rock & blues at an outdoor festival, and my rig is setup like: Tele> modded CS-3> Keeley Rat, with gain set real low> Stingray with cut dimed, tone noon, volume noon. A cool trick with the 'ray...most of this gig is played on the neck pickup, while my country gig is on the bridge...so tonight it's dialed in accordingly for the neck. If you want to instantly go to a really FAT bridge, reach back and twist the tone knob to 3:00...with the Rat on, it's almost like having a 'bucker in the bridge, plenty of bite & thick as all get out.

The Peter Gunn thing about 3/4 of the way through is a cool addition. The amp, and your playing, sound great.

Nice Steve. The biting tone of the Iceman, and the blues is sure in ya.
I enjoyed that one.

The amp to my way of thinking is a spectacular blues amp if that is what you play. Cathode biased amps were born to play the blues .... or rock ... or .....
They are touch dynamic is a way that is lacking in many grid biased amps.
Listen to some of Buddy Whittington's work. He has just about every great blues style in his personal inventory and does these things on everythinng from a MAZ to a Ghia. The Stingray falls right in this family but is also stellar with a Rickenbacker if you want to do those old Beatle Ricky/Vox sixties songs as well.
Bottom line ... it's a great blues amp but also a great most anything amp.

I love this amp. At a recent gig I was hitting the front of the amp with a pretty hot signal using the RC/BB/and MJM blues devil combination and then turned on the Wah.....I was blown away. I was getting cone cry and I was LOVING IT! I think the wah is what causes it to do that, but man what a crazy but musical sound. The moment I turn the wah off it goes away but I though it sounded incredible. I know it is somewhat of a unwanted effect but I thought it was so cool. It doesn't happen when the wah is engaged with any combination of two of my drive pedals but with all three on and the wah it was sonic mayhem/heaven. It was like I had the coolest sounding Octavia at times to the craziest arpeggiator. I was hitting the front end pretty hard in terms of signal not gain on my pedals. So it was not like I had tons of distortion. With all three pedals on it was definitely not wimpy but still had tons of clarity and definition. Anyway I though I would tell you guys about it because I loved the way it sounds. I think the Stingray is the greatest amp I have ever owned so far. I can't wait to hear the Maz38 along side this amp. 'I don't know Karate.....but I know Kerr-azzy' ;D
