I have a Stangray head which I purchased second hand, it tends to make my telecasters sound thin and shrill on the top strings but very deep and almost boomy on the bottoms. This is the same on all three of my telecasters with Lindy Fralin Blues pickups, guitars sound fine through my Carmen Ghia though with same speaker cab which is loaded with a gold and blue Celestion speakers. I have tried adjusting pickups with no luck and also played around with cut and tone knobs. I replaced the tubes and still have a problem. When I turn the volume passed 12 o clock it just turns to mush and sounds awful.
I am sure this is not how it should sound as a friend of mine has the same model and it sounds fantastic when I play my teles through it. Could it be that I just have bad luck with the second lot of tubes tubes ?

You can never rule anything out, but the chances of two sets of tubes having the same issues are small, I would think.
It may be a good idea to send it to the Z shop for a medical.

When I had my 'ray, I found I had to keep the tone knob around 10:00 o'clock. Turning the 'ray's tone knob counter clockwise reduces treble and bass...thus making the mids come out more. I normally kept the cut control around 10-11.
But I ALWAYS had to turn the guitar tone down just a little bit. Turned it down to about 6-7 and kept it there. It was necessary to take that crispy high end sizzle off. (tele guitar)

Did you use the same cab with your friends Stangray? Also the Dr Z repair dept. can assist the trouble shooting if you don't solve it here.

I never used the same cab with my friends Stangray but they share the same type of speakers. The only difference is mine is wired as a 4 ohm cab and he's is a 16 ohm. I only have the one cab and like to use it with my Carmen Ghia as well but it does not have a 16 ohm output hence the reason why it is wired as 4 ohm as I can use it with the Ray as well.
Please tell me, would the Ray sound better if I wire the cab as 16 ohm and use it at that?

I don't really know honestly but I've always thought 4ohms seemed a little brighter. Not that you would feel like you do about yours though....smarter folks then me will surely drop by and help or just email Don at Dr Z repairs.

Will a different brand of EF86 tube help? It currently has the new tung-sol EF86 in it. It also has a tung-sol 5751 in v2, I tried a 12AX7 in that position and it really did not fix the problem. The output tubes are jjs.

Telego, A Tele sounds fantastic through a Stang Ray. You have some issue with your used amp, send it in for evaluation/repair. Z

I would send it in if I could but as I live in Australia it could be costly. I will check with post office and get a price on shipping to USA. I will be trying another new set of tubes in it tonight and see if there is any difference. Maybe my local tech might be able to look at it for me but he has never been inside a Dr Z amp before.

Well for sure shipping it back would be out of the question. The inside of a Stand Ray is incredibly simple, your tech should be able to suss it out. If he needs help he can email repairs@drzamps.com. I assume this is 240 V version.

As the knob goes up, it adds bass and low mid, and if you continue turning it up, it actually starts to take high end OUT of the amp. So if you run the tone low, you'll often need lower Cut settings. Try the tone way up at 3:00 and you'll see that the top end all but disappears without touching the Cut know. Crank the tone back to 1:00 and you'll have a lot more high end and less bottom. I'm usually around 10-12 on the tone, depending on cab (lower with Blues because they flub with too much bass). I'll put the Cut up toweard 10:00 with HBs, but 9:00 or less with my Tele. Justin

This may be a little late but I though I would finish off this post saying after taking the amp to a tech, found there was a problem, the amp may have had a hard knock when it was shipped. The amp came from England to Australia and sometimes if unlucky parcels can be handled improper. The amp was sweet after a very minor repair. I have since sold the amp to buy a Maz 18, kinda wishing I had kept it but maybe I will get another some day.
