Not a Dr.Z actually. I came across a SMOKIN' deal on a mint Richter 5E3. I've always wanted a Tweed Deluxe. Now, it's not gonna kick my Z28 out of the room anytime soon, but I was kinda amazed on just how similar the cranked 5E3 sounds compared to the cranked Z28. Not as loud for sure, not even close. And noticeably less low end. But the grit, the crunch, the touch sensitive note articulation is all very similar.
I went from a 1970 SF Fender Twin to my Z28 2x10" combo 3 years ago, hoping to have a "crank it, plug and play" amp. The Twin was uncrankable, way too loud. And over the past 3 years, I've found the Z28 to also be too loud in a good number of situations, so I rebuilt the pedal board and use dirt pedals. And its still the best tone I've ever had in 27 years of playing. But I can see this 5E3 being the perfect "when you just cant "3-3-3 the Z" 2nd alternative amp.
Bonus on this deal: all strong tested NOS RCA tubes!!! AND several sets of non NOS 6V6's and 4 preamp tubes! I need new tubes in the Dr.Z, so those RCA Blackplate/Greyglass 6V6GT's are going in it. Any comments of them in the z28? I can't see them NOT being awesome. For the 5E3, I can choose from JJ's, Groove Tubes, and Tung Sol Ri's. I put the JJ's in now, will try the others. Out of those 3, what would you all put in a 5E3? The speaker in the 5E3 is a Jensen Ri C12N, which I don't "hate" but that I'll probably replace in the future with something more stout with a less "flubby when cranked" low end. Thoughts? Sara Richter likes the WGS Retro 30.
Lots of noise to be made today!!!
