I'm on the quest for a new amp, and it will be my main amp...looking fona do it all sorts. Usually, that means a Maz Jr, but I've always just never gelled with the upper harmonics and grit that comes on quick with that amp. I would love it if it was cleaner.
The therapy was suggested as an idea, so I wanted to see how much headroom is in the Therapy? Also, can you get that rootsy-indie type tones out of this all the way to some P&W ambient tones? Otherwise, I'd be looking at either the MazJr again (eyeing the RXJr too) or maybe a Z28
thanks!
id really love an antidote, but that's prob too much power and volume for me. Love the glorious tones from that amp, but it would be too much for the clubs I play. MV is prob a must.

I actually think the Therapy sounds and feels really connected to OLD SCHOOL indie, punk kinda stuff. It's got a nice ratty, not Rat pedal just ratty, tone and feels grungy ....like garage rock. That's the overdrive but the cleans are fine for ambient stuff. It's easy to adjust and very flexible. I'm thinking the Therapy is also going to be less compressed than the EL84 style amps .... Kinda like holding up under the weight of hard rocking more.

The Therapy is clearer in its overdrive than say a Monza...but you can get that really great blown out amp sound on old records. The EQ is a great variable to get more odd or unique sounds...dark to bright, muted to crisp.....when I had the V30 in my Z cab i often found myself sounding like a lot of classic rock tunes I grew up listening to, but when I put in the Weber Blue Dog ceramic speaker in the same cab I found the amp to feel a little more chime laden ... More British flavors...it seemed more American with the V30 but I'm just thinking out loud ..... It's another great amp from Dr Z. I wasn't really into the Z sound at first...I took me back with its directness and brightness...just always present clarity( my thoughts on my Z experience here)...Ghia was my first...anyhow a speaker change made me fall in love with the amp and in time, without knowing, I have gotten so use to that Z tone that a recent purchase of another brand amp left me unenthused....I use to want to hide behind the amp more and now I don't want that veil between my fingers and the speaker.
I think what ever Z you get...you will appreciate the way it accurately represents your fingers and it never breaks done under heavy play...crank up the gain, or fuzz ect...Z amps have held up to the pressure and still stay powerful feeling, not overly compressed, can't get the notes out kinda stuff that is out there.
WOW FULL BORE RAMBLE ALERT
it can be sweeter feeling but when the heat gets hot you want more than just a gentle hand ....okay end blabber. Quite a few used Therapys around...if I had it to do over I'd buy new and have the good feeling of supporting Dr Z and his crew. I've bought all my Z amps used.
And breathe......

I use my Therapy with a Z Best at lots of venues. I like it with the Creamback also. Really the Therapy has been great with every speaker and combo I've tried. I haven't done the Gold.

I have the Gold and it sounds great! You can hear the edge of breakup on this cleanish Strat with tremolo clip: Trem Strat Therapy Gold

Not to throw a wrench into the works, but lately I've been playing my Therapy with an open back 1x12 Z cab loaded with Doc's new Z12 speaker that he designed and is built by Eminence. It comes stock in the Z-Lux, and is an American voiced 12. Kind of takes after the old Jensens from the 60's, and it's a really cool speaker. I think it's $89 direct from Z.

Exact same setup I am currently using. And I am very happy with it.I just changed strings and set up both my guitars and it lets the sound of each guitar really come through.I find this speaker/cab let's the Therapy cleans get a little blackface ish toowith eq adjustments.
My cleans are very much like this-which is good cause it's what I wanted when I was researching buying the Therapy.Dave Alvin-the lead gtr player is probably playing a vintage fender mustang through a blonde Fender head/cab which was his rig at the time.He might have made the switch to mid 60's strat, but I'm not sure if it was 83,84,or 85.
