I've been looking for an amp for that 60's blackface sound. My requirements are 2X6L6 2X12" speakers. I've been looking at a 1966 Fender Pro Reverb on Kijiji but the guy seems really evasive, ie: not wanting to send info about trannie codes, etc. So I also see this EZG head on Kijiji and was thinking of investigating that further. So a couple of questions. How much clean headroom does this amp have? Would it be similar to a Pro Reverb with 2 12" speakers? And second what would be a good recommendation for cab\speakers. Keep in mind I'm not necesarily after the Pro reverb sound. I'd probably have swapped out the OT to get more of a half powered twin. So is the EZG a good route to look in to further?

It's been a while since I heard a Pro Reverb, but I'd say you're on the right track with an EZG. There's heaps of clean headroom - I'd describe the sound (esp with 2x12) as righteous, authoritative. I use a cabinet with 2 Celestion golds, but undoubtedly other options will sound equally great. Also, the 2 knob reverb on the EZG will give you more flexibility with reverb settings.

Pro reverb is the only BF Fender I don't like. Compared to all the big BF's, it has a comparatively smaller output tranny, and just didn't do it for me. If you like clean and want a big vintage 2 x 12 fender, a Twin Reverb is the nines. If you want the same glorious sound in a much more (completely) reliable package, the EZG is totally killer!

Maybe otherone chime in. He runs EZG head w/ his old 66 pro as a speaker cabinet, using its 2x12 jensens. What a killer amp! Does that Blackface Pro tone and then some.

So I guess the question would be, is the EZG50 paired with a 2X12 cabinet a good alternative for a half powered twin?

I kinda thought the Pro Reverb had a weak output tranny, and therefore earlier breakup.. not exactly "clean headroom"? The EZG-50, on the other hand, is loud & proud. It's a good "clean platform" amp if you want to use pedals, or just get that loud, clean, fat tone by itself.
Let's not forget the Stang Ray, though--that thing's a LOUD, CLEAN, HIGH-HEADROOM MONSTER. It's a bit more "British chime-y" than the "American" EZG-50, but man I've always thought the Stang Ray through a good 2x12 would give a Twin Reverb a run for its money.
Edit: Sorry, I failed to notice that the OP said he'd likely mod the Pro Reverb's output tranny. IMO, I wouldn't do that... first of all, real '66 Pro Reverbs are worth good $$ and I wouldn't mess with it--there'd be plenty of people willing to buy it off you, because of its tranny's characteristics, if you don't mess with its circuit. Also I'd guess that EZG's are far more reliable AND more readily available than a '60s vintage. Bottom line: if you get the '66 Pro, get it because it's a '66 Pro; but, if you want a good, reliable, high-headroom tone king, then get the EZG.

If that's what yer after, go for it, but it won't be clean. I dig the "POWER" of the Twin or the EZG....

FWIW, I have had many Twins and have to say that my EZG sounds so much better than every Twin I have ever owned. I assume the old, vintage Twins sound a lot better than the ones made in the last 25 years but for me the EZG vs. Twin = No contest. When it comes down to volume the EZG sounds as loud as a 100w Twin according to my bleeding ears... Isn't there a video where someone does a comparison between a vintage twin and a Therapy? Also the Z-Lux has a half power switch and probably hits the BF sweetness you are looking for.

I have a '66 blackface pro w 2 12" Jensen reissue speakers. It is a super loud super clean fender sound amp. Now the two speakers are 50 watts each and all the tubes are super fresh so this particular pro reverb amp is loud and clean. It starts to mildly breakup and only mildly at vol 5 which on this amp is very loud. I use my ezg50 head as well going through the pro reverb as a 2x12 speaker cabinet. It also sounds incredible. They are very similar. Both very loud and very clean. I'd say the difference is that w the ezg50 there is more of an overall clarity to the sound as well as a bit more clean headroom at loud volumes. Both are spectacular amps. I would say if you're after more of a true vintage American fender sound, go with the pro. I do love the ezg50 though. I wouldn't part with either amp. For reference, in the ezg50 I use nos GE 6L6s with nos Tungsol ax7 in v1 and in the pro I use Nos RCA black plate 6L6s with nos RCA 7025 in v2. And I mainly play single coil strats

I looked at a couple of used Dr Z EZG 50 combos. Kijiji. Both of them were 2X10. Then I happenned on a pretty good deal on a Carr Impala head with the matching 2X12 Cabinet. I have to say this amp has exactly what I need. I can't believe the tone at a very low volume and does pretty clean at loud volumes. This has to be one of the warmest amps I've ever owned. I never considered Carr before. I have heard of them but knew nothing of their amps.
