It’s pretty simple - I’m in love. The Therapy seems to be exactly the amp I’ve been looking for for years now and have finally found. There isn’t a single thing I don’t like about it. The controls are simple enough for someone as bone-headed as me to figure out but also versatile enough to easily get usable tones from. I’ve had amps with 12 knobs and 4 channels (way too complex!) and one with 3 knobs (not quite enough) and I’ve now learned that 5 is the magic number for me. 5 good knobs are all I can handle! In fact, I’ve twiddled the knobs a lot with each of my guitars and I haven’t found a tone that I don’t like. It loves all pickups that I’ve tried it with: hums, mini-hums, and single coils. And it makes my tele sound huge! The only setting that I’ve found doesn’t work for my taste is having the bass up past 11 or so with humbuckers. But seriously, that’s the only thing I’ve found “wrong” with this amp.
The thing that sold me was that it has exactly the kind of gain/drive/dirt (not sure what the proper word is here) that I want from an amp. I’ve had it for a few days now and set the V to about 1 or 2….3 if I really want to start cooking. It’s just perfect: sustain, note clarity, harmonics, richness, the complete package. Chords are huge and single note stuff is just exceptional. And the cleans, oh my god, the cleans! Even with the V at 2, if I roll back my GV then I can get the clean-ish sound I want. It’s like having a pedal without having to have a pedal! I haven’t played another amp that ever handles this kind of tonal variety this well. I’m rediscovering the fact that sometimes I do like to play some clean stuff since the notes bloom and sing when you run it with a little less dirt. And while I haven’t played many Zs, this seems to be the most touch-sensitive amp I’ve ever played. This amp will reward players with solid pick-hand technique and make those who don’t have it practice. (I’m in the latter group.)
This is my second Z and I traded my Remedy for it. (See my post in the Transactions thread of the BST page for that story. Suffice it to say here that the Z community is real and filled with some honestly good people!) Don’t get me wrong, the Remedy is a superb amp. It does what it does so well that I’m still scratching my head as to why more people don’t play it. The tone is stellar, and the flexibility with the ½ power switch and MV are brilliant. But after playing it for about a year I came to realize that the sound I had in my head wasn’t quite the sound the Remedy gave me. I did some research and found that the Therapy was probably what I was looking for. And it was! (Thanks to Pete for all of his advice.)
I’ve had a chance to play it at home and at practice and it has performed perfectly. I couldn’t be happier. Now I’m just itching for our next gig so I can really turn it up and let her loose!
