I'm just going to go out and say it, I'm an idiot. I wanted a Zwreck and I got one, not really realizing how loud it was going to be. And I LOVE it...but it's too loud for anywhere I'm playing. I have an Airbrake that helps, but I'd like to do a little more if I'm going to keep it. Would unplugging the blue and just running through the 8ohm gold be a good option?
I'd appreciate any help you guys might have!
Thanks, Jason

I had a similar problem, and did the same thing! Cutting down to the 1 speaker certainly helped, although I think that an actual 1x12 cab was more beneficial to me. I have the quantum silver set and now I have a bit more freedom to turn it up (although not nearly where I'd want it to be!) but if I need it quieter I run it through a 1x12 closed back cab and I'd say it knocks it down a bit more.

I also use mine with a 1-12 closed back cab. I can't compare it to the 2-12 setup because I don't have one of those, but the 1-12 works well. And the closed back helps keep the sound fairly directional. It's a 1-12 Mesa Thiele cab with an EV.

Maybe use a lower efficiency speaker, Jason. I'm really enjoying the Celestion Creamback speaker. At 97 db compared to the gold and blue's 100db, it's a MUCH quieter speaker.

I'm in the same boat. I'm very happy with my amp stable right now (Zlux, Maz 18, Zwreck), but the Wreck is not getting much action because it is tough to get it to it's sweet spot at half the gigs I play. I use and airbrake but I find that I lose a lot with it attenuated above 1 or 2.
I was considering trading it for a Zwreck combo. It's probably much easier just to disconnect the Blue and run it at 8ohms.

I used el844's, a greenback, and a brakelite on 1 or 2 clicks with my wreck. It worked great, but ultimately i felt kind of guilty, like i had just captured and caged some wild beast! Traded for a Maz 18 eventually, problem solved. Its just about perfect for every stage i play on.

Weber DT Speaker ( Derek Trucks) is supposed to be low efficiency so you can crank your amp up a little more.

Z-Wreck 1x12 combo baby!
I had the head/2x12 and it was too loud for a lot of the places I played and the Brake-Lite just didn't to it.... I lucked into a combo cab on CL back around Christmas and been super happy ever since! I just popped my chassis in the cab and a Gold and was playing it in 20 minutes after getting it!
Yes, I still use the Brake-Lite, but the sound is less but better IMO. I also think the 1x12 combo cab has it's own mojo and actually feels like it has more low end??

Another vote for the 1X12 combo. Did a side by side comparison before I bought mine. The combo is more forgiving, volume wise.
I also run a Brake Lite in mine. My default position is position two. I like being right in the middle...I've got two louder positions (1 and off), and two quieter positions (3 and 4) to play with. That way, the tonal change isn't that drastic if you have to switch either way. (Unlike going from off to position 4).

That said, I have and use a Maz 18 NR that I bought new in 2008 as my first Z. It's my tonal center, but it ain't a Wreck! I LOVE the Wreck tone, voice, and harmonic content - it was just too much amp for me.

I have room to go up or down if need be, but usually in the middle. Tomorrow I'll be playing it at a casino, they like it REALLY quiet! I had mine one more click down, with an amp shield in front of it last time and that was about perfect for there. I will throw this out.. IF, that's a BIG IF, I ever get rid of the Z-Wreck, it will probably be for a Maz Jr NR. It's going to take a lot for me to get to the point I want to get rid of it though.

I've just about decided that a Maz 18 is what I need.
I love the Zwreck, but I feel like it's more than I need (or deserve!).

As badly as i wanted to, i didn't really need mine. The Maz 18 is a much more appropriate amp for my needs, and ultimately i'm happier with that than with having what's probably my favorite sounding amp i've ever heard.

That said though, i've no regrets in owning a Wreck for a year and getting to bask in its tonal glory!

Have you tried any of your Weber speakers in the combo cab? The gold sounds great in there I know, just a little curious. I have a 50wt ceramic Silver Bell and I'm thinking of getting another one in an alnico version.

I have a 50wt ceramic Silver Bell and I'm thinking of getting another one in an alnico version. Long story- When I first got the Z-Wreck, I only got the head. I had an Avatar with a Mesa C90 and used that for a few weeks.......It actually sounded pretty good. I then put my 50w Weber Alnico Blue Dog in that Avatar cab and it sounded even better. I finally saved up enough to buy the Wreck cab, but with only 1 speaker (the Gold). So I played the Wreck cab with a Gold and Weber blue mix for a few months, and it sounded even better. I eventually ended up with another Gold in a trade, swapped out the Weber for a 2nd Gold in the cab and liked it so much that I sold my Weber Blue.....Actually, let me re-phrase that. After I put the 2nd Gold in the cab, it sounded almost identical to the Gold/Weber blue mix but I figured 2 Golds was a smarter move if I ever wanted to sell it. Actually, let me rephrase that: With the Weber in the cab was a little warmer......The 2nd gold was more percussive and had a little less low end. I swapped the chassis and 1 gold into the combo cab right around the first of the year and really can't imagine a better sound? I like it a lot better than the 2x12 cab. The other Gold is back in the Avatar cab for my backup rig/extra cab rig. My poor Silver head & cab are now stashed in my closet in my bedroom. Not sure I'll ever put the chassis back inside it, but something that looks that good is worth keeping in case I ever do. Plus, I'd like to keep it all a set for if I EVER do sell it. Did that answer your question?

I was just curious - I'm sure it would still be great with the Webers as well.

I've learned, the hard way, that you can change preamp tubes and poweramp tubes for the best and most expensive current production or NOS tubes ..... You can even swap out for higher quality caps in your amp (if not a Z, of course) and the BIGGEST change in tone and feel comes from a speaker swap. I'm running my "lake gig/small stage" rig, which is a Crate PowerBlock and BOSS GT-10, into that Avatar cab with the Gold and it sounds AMAZING. I've tried that same setup through different cabs and speakers, but the Gold changes everything makes it sound so much better. Just some FYI: I've had Weber Alnico Blue's, Celestion Blue's, Eminence Red Fangs, and ToneTubby Alnico speakers...The Weber Blues have always been my favorite "Blue" Copy, until I tired the Gold. ***Sorry for the thread hijack.... I'll PM you if I have any other info for you

I'll PM you if I have any other info for you I agree. Speaker swaps have always been my biggest tone changers. Tubes can change it but they're a lot more subtle than speakers. Well since this is a volume reduction thread, I believe the Weber Blue and Silver are less efficient than the Celestions - so there's that.
