Hello everyone, Im a new member and will be getting a used EZG-50 head in about 1 week. I have decided to get a new DR Z 1X12 convertible cab, but had a few questions as to which speaker to choose. I've read a lot of threads here and the celestial gold comes up a lot as being a great speaker for this amp. I am wondering is this speaker which is only rated at 50 watts safe for this amp? I will be using a power station with the EZG-50 so I will be attenuating and driving the power tubes. I use overdrive and clean boost pedals as well. I play mostly SRV, Trower, Hendrix, occasionally clean country and hard rock. Also I have the option for either the G12-65 or G12m that comes standard with the cab. Which of these 2 speakers would work best for the type of music I play? Appreciate any suggestions or comments you may have. Thanks!

You might want to think about the Dr.'s new speaker. He said it sounds great with the EZG.

New Z 12 or Weber 12F150. I'd go with the new Z 12 though. If you dont yet have access to the Buy Sell and trade forum where the speaker is being sold, just email repairs@drzamps.com for $89.

Get a Weber. I personally like the silver bell.

I am still getting used to my EZG with a fairly recent purchase. I first tried a G12M-65 creamback in a Z 1x12 convert cab and thought it sounded ok. Swapped out for a gold and I like the gold much better. As far as the gold being a 50 watt speaker, the amp is also 50 watts and I cannot imagine you will crank the amp as it is very loud, so there should not be an issue there. You mentioned attenuation as well. Since seeing the announcement for the new Z 12 speaker I have been considering one of those to try out since the Doc says it will sound good with the EZG and the Maz Sr and I have both amps.
Another factor what types of guitars will you be playing with the EZG. The main difference is single coil vs humbuckers. For me so far playing a tele primarily. You mentioned styles of music and they seem heavier blues to rock for the most part so maybe one of the non-gold speakers may work best with this American/blackfaced voiced amp? The gold with single coils and cleaner country is sweet sounding but the gold can rock out as well. You mentioned using pedals so can get nice distortion tone with the golds too, albeit with the alnico magnets not as much in the low end. I have a 2x12 as well loaded with a gold and a G12H-75 creamback to get benefits of both types of speakers. Have to make a decision one way or another with just a 1x12 of course and I am kind of at this point too with my 1x12.

I play with a strat a lot but mostly a Reverend Studbaker with p90's (this guitar does it all). I may end up with a 2x12 cab as well. 1-gold and 1-new Z speaker might be the ticket. Good to know about the gold being able to work with the EZG. Is the new Z speaker going to be an option with his cabs one day? Thanks for the feedback!

I've tried many speakers (individual and combinations) and it's the G12-65 that does if for me.
It's been THE speaker for this amp for nearly 5 years now. It still try different speakers but still come back to it- I have two of them in a 2X12 open back cab.
When I get a moment to breathe, I have a Eminence Legend that I will put in a 1x15 cab I got from Mark (Basement Enthusiast). This combo just might be the one that dethrones the G12-65.
We shall see...

Looks like Im going to get a 2x12 DR Z cab. One comes with 2 Creambacks and the other 1-vintage30 and 1-G12H-30. What would be the tonal differences with these two options with my EZG-50? Also I will probably get a Gold or the new Cream Alnico to experiment with later down the road.

Make sure you're wearing your "big boy pants" that day, Steve! That Legend 151's bigger & louder sounding than the G12-65 but it sounds soooooo Fendery, it's gorgeous. Creambacks (and also the lower-wattage Greenbacks) are typically more "classic '60s/'70s British rock" sounding, whereas a combination of Vintage 30 + G12H-30 will be (A) louder for sure, and (B) more able to do '70s/'80s hard rock. (Greenbacks/Creambacks lack the horsepower to really do scooped high-gain the way the V30/12H can do it.) With your EZG-50, I'd probably start with the Creambacks because they're a little more vintage -y like what would be found in a blackface amp.

Thanks for the explanation, that definitely help me determine which way to go. What about the Gold/Cream Alnico speakers, I assume they are 60s/70s British rock as well, but in what ways are they different compared to the Creambacks?

Remember that there are two versions of the creamback. The G12M-65 (65 watt) has the medium sized magnet similar to a greenback while the G12H-75 (75 watt) has the large magnet similar to the G12H-30. I use my G12M-65 in my 1x12 Z cab and pair a gold with the G12H-75 in my 2x12 Z cab because the sensitivity of the 2 speakers is 100db each. The G12M-65 is a lower sensitivity rating, 97db iirc, thus quieter than 100db speakers.

Just got my EZG 50 and DR Z 1x12 cab w/ new Z speaker. This EZG is a beast, super reverb on steroids. By itself w/a strat its SRV city, with various pedals the skys the limit. So much punch and depth to this amp. Excellent deep reverb from the small pan. The new Z speaker sort of sounds like a Texas Heat w/ more clarity and more american sounding. It runs the table from clean to rock, Im sure it will get sweeter with time. Cant wait to try it out w/the powerstation and drive those 6L6s hard at sane levels. Maz Jr/ Ghia next? LOVIN IT!!

After several hours the new Z speaker is relaxing a bit and sounding less harsh (its an excellent all around speaker, sounds great clean and overdriven). The power station is a must have piece of equipment for me. I crank the EGZ pre to 2/3 o'clock and post at 11 put the PS at 9 for sweet 6L6 breakup at easy listening volume with zero loss of tone or dynamics from the EZG. Then hit it with a TS 808 or a rat set at low gain for lead fills. Im very happy with the EZG and the Dr Z 1x12. Looks like I have a Monza and a new Dr Z 2x10 cab on the way for a different flavor. I hadn't planned on getting the Monza so soon but a great deal came up so I couldn't pass it up. Looking forward to using the 2x10 with the EZG as well.

Z Speaker alert.... But first I agree that the Powerstation is a great match for the EZG-50 to avoid going deaf and there is no degradation in tone that I can hear. I don't run as hot as you and I have the Pre at 1 pm and the Post around 9 am to get the Wind Cries Mary tone/level of breakup. My favorite pedal with this amp is the Seymour Duncan 805 Overdrive (tube screamer type pedal) for leads. I also use a Timmy pedal for a boost. Now, to the Z Speaker. I've been running the EZG-50 with either a 1x12 EVM12L or a 4x10 with 4 Weber NeoMag speakers which deliver a nice low end that is not colored. Both work well but I like the 4x10 for the fuller sound at low or high volumes. I received 2 Z 12" speakers today to install in my 2x12 and I have to admit that I really like these speakers. They are a good match for the EZG-50 and it makes me want to go out and buy a Z-Lux head to also match with it. Not sure if I will like them more than my 4x10 or not yet but I am very impressed with them. They are also different than what I use today and I really like what I hear so far. I really want to try these speakers out with my Tele (I only tested with my Strat).. More to come after I spend more time with them...
