I have a RxES posted in BST and have been offered a Z-28 1x10 combo. I'm concerned it will be too similar to my Route 66 and wanted to get opinions. The Route has been my go-to amp for some time and I'm looking to trade the RxES off to expand my "Z" tones. I use it through a Z Best with stock speakers and will plan to do the same with whatever amp I end up with in trade.
Thoughts?

They are in the same tonal family. If you want to diversify your tone I'd go with something else. FWIW

I had the 28, 66 and KT45 (plus a Mazerati v2) at the same time. I sold the 66; I found the 28 more practical for a lot of the kind of jobs I play and also thought that the 66 was a little dark (at least to my ears), kind of like the KT is a little bright until you tame the treble side. The 28 doesn't have either of these characteristics. FYI, I play bucker-equipped guitars through my 28 almost exclusively.
My Rati and CG Anniversary are both outstanding units that I also use a lot; they are very practical and easy to dial in with any instrument I have.

Are they too similar? No ... imho, ymmv, .02 ..... If my playing needs and budget permitted, I would own both of 'em with a pair of matching 410 cabs happy shopping and cheers always, eh Joel

I have both, although I do not have a Z-best cabinet(yet!) The z-28 is more Fender, especially with a 5751 in the phase inverter. Fender sparkle, but not the scooped mids of a blackface, nice tight bottom. When you turn it up(333)it is bit more gritty(in a good way) then the 66. I can even get coax some vox chime with a 12"redfang.

I have the m12, z28, and sold my r66... All share the same tone stack. I regret letting go of the 66, but it was too loud to play live with given what I'm doing. My z28 is about self indulgence. The m12 is good for some low volume Deluxe tones... And I've matched it with a Beyma Liberty (E120 jbl).

Z-28 = Fender brown face deluxe. More like a powerful brown Princeton to me. The brown deluxes I've played had almost no clean headroom. They were almost like mini Marshalls. The brown Princeton has a nice clean range before the OD kicks in, just like the Z-28. Maybe I've just never played the right brown deluxe.

I moth-balled the original speaker and replaced it with an alnico Weber (50 watts?). I did this to try to gain more clean headroom...it might have made a little difference, but not a lot. I would tend to agree- Brown Deluxes have limited clean headroom. One caveat- I am a humbucker user. The amp CANNOT be used for club gigging without being mic'd.
