A friend used to have a Zoom H4n portable digital recorder. Simple and handled high volume live audio just great. Anyone have recommendations for newer ones or other ideas? The old DV cam is a pita for live and we usually overdrive the mic by the 3rd set TIA

I've got a Tascam DR-40 that works great. Kind of big, but it will fit into a "large" shirt pocket.

My zoom has been trusty as well. They have a new video cam out that has me eye.

I recently got a Zoom H5 for my church to record the services (I'm the sound man & lead guitarist there).. While learning how to use it, I took it to a couple of my club/bar gigs. I got some of the best "live" recordings I've ever gotten using that recorder! You can record using the 2 external mic's, plus you have 2 direct XLR-1/4 inch inputs. So you have the stereo track from the mic's and 2 other tracks that record on 2 separate tracks that you can mix on the unit or dump it to your computer and mix them in you DAW. So I sat the H5 on top of the speaker, had a board mix and then my guitar (of course) Picked up the bass pretty good. I'll probably see about borrowing it again in the near future or buying one for myself. You can hear the tracks I recorded in the "Audio" section here on Z-talk(here: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/66713/tele-paisley-drive-wreck-withers ).

Zoom just came out with the Q8. If I was buying a new one I would go that route! Lot's of flexibility!

So Sean... do you want an audio recorder or video? I use and H4n like you used, so I can't tell you much you don't already know....but it works fine for my needs.... Good luck...

Looking at the Q4 and Q8, seems like a good jump for for me as the only video camera I have right now is an old Canon that uses mini-dv tapes! I have been reading other reviews of the Zoom and seems mixed bag - will try to get my hands on one or might just order one to play with - esp if there is a good return policy if it doesn't work in low light.

The Q8 looks very nice. I might be tempted too. I like the idea of the detachable mics and the huge sd storage.
