I've been wanting one since I played one at the Palir Guitars booth at NAMM last summer. I'm currently corresponding with a seller with a Mini 1x10 combo. I will probably pick it up if it doesn't sell before I get my tax money.
Couple of things:
1. It is now a 1x10 (the combos), correct? Will they fit a 12" speaker?
2. Could someone explain this whole Maz 8 transformer in the Mini thing to me? I keep reading old threads about it but I don't know anything for fact.Do newer ones sport the Maz tranny? If so, what year did that start? How do you know if its been done. FURTHERMORE, can you send it to Dr Z to have it done? Is it expensive?
3. How is the amp as a pedal platform? I'm looking for an amp to play at home for pedal review demos for my youtube channel. This will hold me over until I save up to buy a bigger Z. I had a Carmen Ghia but it was so loud and the gigs I get just don't allow that beast! I really want an M12.
4. I'd probably change the speaker to try to increase headroom. I'm partial to hemp cones (cannabis rex, tone tubby 40/40) but those more with 6v6 amps. Would those be ok in a Mini Z with its el84s or would I need something more "British" flavored? What are some other speakers that would increase the headroom of the mini?
5. I know Z's watts are crazy loud. My ghia (at "18" watts) could bury my drummer with the volume around 10 o'clock (granted its older style country). Is it possible to gig this amp with a country band if you have an efficient speaker?
6. What year did they start with the attenuator? I remember it being like a vol and tone (2 knob layout), or many just 1 knob (vol). Are the older ones without the attenuator better?
For reference I play country at home and in small clubs with a Tele with super hot single coil Budz pups (the style master neck and a custom wound 9.9k bridge to balance with the high output neck) and a modest pedal board (barber tone press compact, Barber Gain Changer, Wampler Faux AnalogEcho, and an EQD Tone Job EQ/Boost).
I was just going to get a Fender Pro Jr as a home amp (as they're crazy cheap used) for demos but ever since I went hand wired last year, I can't go back!!!!
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me direct at: G.Osborne1987@gmail.com
I will see the email immediately. Sometimes I miss messages and stuff on this site.
Thanks,
Gary
