I've been playing an original RX as my main gigging amp for the last few months. I am always complimented on my tone, and people ask me what the amp is supposed to be... All I've ever read is "Marshall-y"... So what is it actually based on? Because Marshall-y can mean a thousand things. I do understand that it's got its own thing going on, but I wanna know the truth!! Thanks

You may have seen this write-up from the Dr. Z site's discontinued section:
"Prescription:
NOTE: as of Fall 2004, this amp is no longer in production. It has been replaced by the Prescription Extra Strength.
The Prescription is one of the Doctor's first amps, and its reputation will allow it to be one of the most popular Dr.Z amps for years to come. Players across the country have sung its praises, critics have gushed, and the word has spread. The Prescription is a British-voiced amplifier with its own distinct personality.
The tone of this amp screams rock and roll when cranked, but when clean, its bell-like tone and piano-like clarity on the low notes gives excellent articulation on complex chords. The Prescription is complex and rich in harmonics, and gives incredible touch sensitivity and string-to-finger feel. So whether you're looking for clean and pretty, or crunch of doom for some rippin' blues slide, the 'Script may be the amp for you. "
This description sounds more "Vox AC-30" than anything else. Certainly moreso than "Marshall." But, it probably has so much original Dr. Z sauce in it to make it truly unique.
It sounds like a Dr. Z! :-)
Best, Eddie

I have three original RXs - including the original prototype and one that is labelled as a Mk II Maz 38. In my mind they have that crunch of the Marshall with the harmonics of a Vox. Very unique amp!! I love the tone of these amps!

What changed from the original to the ones that followed. For us less informed and interested types.

In my mind they have that crunch of the Marshall with the harmonics of a Vox. I totally agree. I also could be totally off-base, but I really liken the original Rx's sound to the older Joe Perry sound--that good ol' Marshall crunch with a whole lot of "kerrang" added to it (must be the Vox-y harmonics?). Nasty, but ever so musical.
