^^^^ Everything seemed awesome about this guitar except the sound. I usually don't prefer the sound of Humbucker guitars (except my SG). So I'm usually all about teles and strats; and I have a Collings Soco with TV Jones Filtertron pups that I greatly preferred, so that hampered me wanting to spend the time to experiment with the I-35. It took me about 6 months to "dial in" one of my amps to match this guitar. I couldn't find a sound I liked with any other amp except a 57 Tweed Bandmaster..... Now, nothing else sounds as good as this pairing. You can ask Sean and MarkT....it took me a while.... That makes me question as well. I have a Lentz with Humbuckers/ It's a Great player but I just can't bond with the Tone. I've found some I35 Lc I could save 1000.00 on , but your reply makes me wonder whether I should Pay the full dollar and order P-90's or TV Jones . I am mostly a Tele Guy so Maybe the I35 isn't meant for me at all.

The TV Jones Filtertron Classics sound incredible in a Collings... You need to find one and try it. OBTW, my I-35 has the upgraded Throbak Humbuckers, not the std Lollar Imperials....

We prefer them. The solid mahogany I-35's are kinda dark sounding, and as you noted, much more expensive than the LC....

Are the Thorbaks that much nicer? They are hotter correct? There's a used walnut I found for 3500.00 with the Throbaks . What about P-90's Pretty difficult where I live to try one

Are the Thorbaks that much nicer? They are hotter correct? Nicer is is the ears of the beholder. Lollar Imperials are great pickups, but the Throbaks have a more vintage vibe. More clarity and air around the notes. Not hotter. The Lollars may be a little better if you play overdrive, especially distortion, mainly.....but the Throbaks are better if you play more clean....they sound great with overdrive too and are better for versatility.

Looks like if I Buy New I can have Thorbaks for 4200.00 . There's a nice Burst 2014 for 3200.00 and a Cherry 2014 ( Duncan Antiquities) for 3100.00 Mark did you get the black guard and matching rings from Collings?

Mark did you get the black guard and matching rings from Collings? Yes..... Ordered them from Collings and installed myself. Another thing about the Collings craftsmanship....the rings start out like all rings, with a flat bottom. Collings modifies them to make them fit perfect on the arched top. The polishes every minute imperfection out... It's the little things...

The Pope made me do it. Let me explain…
Some of you may be aware that the Pope is visiting the US right now, and was in Washington, DC yesterday and today. Congestion/traffic in this area is already pretty bad, but events like this often bring the city to a standstill. Anyhow, lots of businesses closed, and lots of companies told people not to come in, or to work from home. Lots of folks treated the day like a snow day, too. So, between the Pope’s visit, and yesterday being Yom Kippur in the Jewish faith, DC was pretty much a ghost town yesterday.
I walked to work, anticipating a worse than usual Metro experience, and there was no traffic at all, either on foot, or bike, or car. Hmm. When I got in, there were about seven people in the office. Crickets. I had a pretty unproductive morning – emails to clients going unanswered, phone calls going to voicemail, etc. Bo-ring. I had a previously planned lunch meeting, and when I got back to the office, we were down to five people. At about 130pm, I decided that there was pretty much no reason for me to be there, so I left.
One of the nut slots on my Strat has been buzzing, so I figured I would take advantage of the lack of traffic and head out to the local guitar place, which is actually in Falls Church, VA. Normally, I’d never even consider trying to go out there during afternoon rush hour (yes, 2pm is pretty much the start), but I had a good feeling.
Twenty minutes later, I pulled in to the lot (that’s pretty much record time), to find the store closed. Permanently. Thankfully, they left a sign showing their new location, 8 blocks away.
So, the guys took my Strat in back to deal with the nut slot, and I noticed not one, but four nice Collings on the wall. They became a dealer recently. Three I-35LCs (Red, Burst, and Yellow), and a Burst SoCo LC. I played the red I-35 first. It was really nice, but nothing I had to have. Same with the SoCo. It was nice, but the bigger body was a little boomy - I liked that one less than the I-35. At this point, 20 minutes later, my Strat was done (Thanks, guys!), and I was about to leave.
And then, I looked back and saw the yellow I-35. Uh-oh. Out of nowhere, I heard what sounded like my voice say “Hey – can I play the yellow one?” The next hour plus (!) was a blur. I was plugged into a Swart STR Tremolo, which is a familiar voice for me. I could not put the thing down. I had a complete ****-eating grin on my face the whole time. It just had an extra something special compared to the red one, or the SoCo. The playability and tone was just astounding.
I’m trying to resist, but the idea of not acting, and having someone else get that guitar made me hit a sour note – the first one in a while. So at that point, it’s not “am I going to buy this guitar”, but “what am I going to sell to swing this”, and how do I explain the “going to the guitar store with one guitar, and coming home with two” to my wife.
So, I bought it. And took it home and played until almost midnight. I’m typing this with very sore fingers today. And, I’m going to play it tonight until my fingers won’t let me anymore.
And so that, my friends, is the story of how the Pope helped this culturally Jewish, but mostly atheist dude get a Collings. If I were the guitar-naming type (and I’m not), this one would clearly be named “The Pope/Pontiff”, or possibly “Frankie”.
Now, I have to figure out what to sell. Likely my Eastman T186 (which I’ve been contemplating for a while), and my PRS DGT. Oh well. It’ll be worth it.

New Collings congrats! Thanks, guys. Man, I'm a lucky dude to be able to pull this off. I just came upstairs from about 90 minutes in the basement plugged in to both the Ghia and my Swart. This thing kills. I've never had the experience I had yesterday happen before. After 20 minutes or so, I knew there was no way I could go home without that guitar. It sounds like me. I'm ok with selling my Eastman- I've struggled with the wide/flat neck since I hurt my wrist last year. I love the way it sounds, but I just can't play it without a struggle. Oh well. I am a little bummed about selling the DGT, though. I picked it up a few months ago, and really dig it. It's a fantastic Strat/LP hybrid that has its own thing going on. I guess I could keep it, but I'm at 7 electrics right now, and it feels like a lot. Six is a much rounder number, I think. And, seriously, as a PSA to all- Do NOT play a Collings in your local store unless you plan on buying it. Because you will buy it.

That's HOT! I can see why it's so hard to put down. Congrats again! Thanks! I actually liked the finish on the cherry one I played better, but liked the feel and sound of this one more. I do like the way it looks, though. Kind of "peekaboo" flame in the wood that sort of pops when you look at it on the right angle. I tried to capture that in the pic. Fingers pretty sore today. Might have to take a day off. Through the Ghia with the volume at noon and the tone at 11am was pretty fantastic. All sorts of shades of clean/dirty just by messing with the guitar volumes.

Everything that MarkT described above is accurate about the Throbak's but I will throw some more descriptions in for them in that they have that killer "Mid-Range" honk and "woody" and "throaty" tones that everybody loves in the older Vintage PAF's when you started adding gain to them! MarkT's description of more clarity and air around the notes is "DEAD ON"!These are lower gain vintage PAF's and just as MarkT said they aren't high output HB's! I'm totally convinced that the lower output of authentic PAF's is one of the factors that makes them sound so good when played clean as well as overdriven because you get so many variations and different overtones as you go from clean to moderate overdrive to full on crunch mode! Chords stay very articulate even when you are getting moderate overdrive and full on crunch with the Throbak's! Jon Gundry currently offers about 14 different models of the Throbak's! I don't believe any other pickup builder offers anywhere near that many different "Sets" to choose from! Mac
