2003 Maz NR...making more hum than it should.
Is it time for a cap job?. They say caps are usually good for 10 years, we all know they can last longer than that, but I'm starting to wonder.
I'd ship it to Z, but I'm in canada and shipping it in it's road case would cost an arm and a leg....it still might be the best option.
I havent ruled out the tubes yet.
Lot of miles on this one.

Pretty sure Doc would suggest to just send the chassis...

Pretty sure Doc would suggest to just send the chassis... That's pretty scary. I really don't trust the shipping people enough to do that.

I sent a z28 back in one time...just have to make sure it is wrapped up good in bubble wrap and double boxed if possible.

My Mazerati is still going strong after fifteen years. Could it be the tubes slippin' a bit?

If you haven't tried changing the power tubes, I'd recommend going that route first. From what I understand, "hiss" and "crackle" can come from a bad preamp tube but "hum" or lower droning sounds can come from bad power tubes.
Worst case scenario is you'd end up with a fresh quad of EL84's but still need to get new filter caps.
Doc's shop may also have a trusted contact up there that they could recommend for a cap job if you really don't want to ship it.
Maybe try a set of tubes, then if that doesn't do the trick, call the shop.
Keep us posted, ok? Good luck! Eddie

I'm down to my last pair of el84's....I usually keep spares, need to order more.
It's not really hiss or crackle, it's low volume hum...after playing for a bit, you don't really notice, it sits under the sound of your playing.

Figured it out.
Broke a leg off one of the 150ohm resistors.
