Since I'm Z-less right now, and waiting on my new MAZ 38 NR head and Route 66, I've got a couple of Fenders on loan. One of them is a producer friend of mine's '71 Deluxe Reverb. Look, it's not going to replace my Z's any time, but sometimes we are reminded that there is still some magic in old gear. And I mean, *UNTOUCHED* gear. This amp has the original EVERYTHING. Tubes, caps, and Oxford 12L6 ( which is a bit unusual, since it was usually a 12K5.) And I'm sure the circuit is AA270 or some other "crappy" or undesirable circuit. As much as everyone goes nuts about speakers, tubes, mallory silver mica whatevers, blackface overhauls, etc. this little thing just reminded me that some times it's just best to shut up & play. I even did a session with it a couple of days ago, and it was perfect. Here's a couple of noodle clips I did yesterday. Clean Strat, clean Tele, and Strat with my new BB pre-amp. This thing sounds so good, I challenge anyone to tell me how much it needs all of the newfangled gear upgrades! (Although, a cap job and a grounded power cord wouldn't be a bad idea.) Great amp..... www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770

You may have discredited some of the gear hype but you also just added some fuel to the "vintage is better" fire! I only listened to the tele clip so far but man, it dont get much better n that

A/B the Deluxe and Rt 66, that's some nice rig! Too bad you probably have to give the Deluxe back. I practised with a Z-28/Rt 66 A/B/AB'ed and if was very useful!

Yeah, I'll have to give the Deluxe back. It was a Christmas gift to my producer friend when he was 15 from his dad. So he'll never sell it- But I work with him a lot, so he knows it's in good hands.
Funny thing is, it hasn't been plugged into in years. It's been sitting in his studio under a desk. I told him I wanted to check it out, and he was like, "Man, you are welcome to it, but I don't think it works."
I'm no tech, but I know how "tough" these old amps can be sometimes in terms of durability.
When I got it, the tubes were barely hanging on, there was lots of dust & cobwebs, and the power transformer had fallen out of the chassis, just hanging there by the wires!!
So I yanked the chassis, and cleaned all the connections. Tightened up all the chassis screws & tube sockets, then put the power tranny back in place. Got the tubes all firmly seated, then worked the control pots back & forth 20-30 times.
Fired her up, and it was like "Voila!"
Took it straight to a session that same morning and it was wonderful!

That Tele and Deluxe clip...it'd be hard to improve on IT. That is some spanking clean, punchy & twangy tone (and playing) going on...love it! ;D

I have an absolutely stock, original '68 Pro Reverb and it is a GREAT amp......it could use a grounded cord...I gigged it a while back..stepped up to the mike to let out a beller and WHAMM
'bout blew my lips off !!
But with a Strat straight in it's magic......SF Fenders rule.

sometimes we are reminded that there is still some magic in old gear. And I mean, *UNTOUCHED* gear. I've been screamin' this for years...I am witchoo Jason.. My old SF Twin, and my '75 JMP MKII are stone original man.. As long as they still sound as good as they do, I 'aint touchin' either one of 'em..Heavy mofo's tho.. I was lookin' into "blackfacing" my Twin a while back, but Myles talked me out of it.. Thx Mr. Rose. Great clips man.. I LOVE hearing things like this..Killer players such as yourself touting the wonders of ancient gear, and makin' it sound sooo damn good, give an ancient player like me a new spark..Makes me realize that maybe I DID know a little somethin' about tone ..."back in the day".. ;D T rock

Jayson, as always, great playin' and awesome tones! What strat were you using? The tone from your guitars always sound so balanced from string to string, clear, and with such pop to them. I know tone comes from a lot of places (combination of type of amp, guitar, strings, speaker(s), plectrum (or not), etc.) and most predominantly from the players fingers, but man if I could get close (tone-wise) to what you've got I'd be very, very happy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was just looking through the board and the dreaded *Ebay* trying to make up my mind on weither or not to trade/sell my 1970 Deluxe in so I can get a Dr. Z.... I came here looking for clips of a Z-28 and found the '71 Deluxe clips and .................... I think I'll hang on to my Deluxe after hearing those clips!
Sometimes it takes a different perspective on an amp your ears are used to hearing (my Dad got this amp 33 years ago). Glad you started this thread.
Thanks Jayson!

Oh yeah, don't sell off your dad's amp! Your Mesa will move eventually, then you're good to go on a Z...

Well, to be fair, let me clarify my intentions...LOL I certainly wasn't here to make the argument that "vintage is better." In fact, I'll tell exactly why it's often *not* better in a minute... My point was that sometimes there's some voodoo in that old gear that we grew up hearing, and it still has it's place. But I got rid of my creme-puff '66 Deluxe Reverb because it *could not* do what my MAZ 18 could do, while the MAZ could absolutely do what the Deluxe did. Analogy would be that the '66 Deluxe was the wise old master past his prime, but still was great at it's thing. But the MAZ 18 was "grasshopper" that had passed by the old dog.... The problem with old Fenders is that they can be so tempermental and finnicky about certain rooms & environments, while the Z's do their thing *every* time. Kind of like when Bluzsteel made a comment a while back about old Supers. One night, it sounds like the "voice of Gawd!" Then the next 10 nights you fight the SOB with all your might... I still think amps like what Dr. Z makes are truly the "better mouse-trap." But the old ones are still fun to have a fling with now & then...
