So I'm a long time Maz Jr player. Came across a good deal on a M12 the other day. This one came with the DR. Z 10" speaker. I bought this through Reverb.com, I've never played one before.
The idea was to find a replacement for the Maz Jr. 2X10 NR that I've been dragging around. I love the Maz, but at 77lbs, it's too heavy. I've never used it to it's full potential. I play at a small church (400 people) about twice a month and have barely been able to get the Maz above 9 on either the volume or master.
The idea of the M12 just made sense. However, I've not seen much love around here for the 10" speaker. It's got me concerned.
Is there anyone out there using a M12 combo with a 1x10 and loving it?
I'm using a G&L Asat Special and Gretsch T.Rose with a PT2 full of pedals.

I love 1x10 combos! Congrats. Have owned several different Z's and miss each of them! Todd

I have an M12... Also have both a 1x10 and a 2x10... Both with red fangs. The 1x10 sounds a tad nasely in comparison. I tried golds, greenbacks, and WGS g10c/s... Like the red fangs best by far.
Some (ok, most) EF86 preamp tubes can be a tad fragile and become microphonic. I put my M12 in a head cab and carry speakers separate.
the studio 12 would be a good option, but they don't make one for that size chassis unfortunately... Only for the maz size chassis.

I have an M12 1x10 combo with a Celestion gold. Love it, small and reasonable light weight. I've thought about the Mather pine 1x12 cab and decided against it as the 1x10 with gold sounds BIG enough for the stuff I play. Hope this helps.

The M12 arrived today. The size and weight is exactly what I hoped for. Looks amazing to in "blackout"! Only had a few min to play it, but in that short time I never found the sound I'm looking for. I will be honest here. I'm looking to get the tone of my MAZ JR 2X10 out of the M12 1X10. Maybe I'm out to lunch to think this is even possible.
smolder and jimiata, what did the "Red Fang" and "Gold" bring you that Dr.'s 10 did not?
I bought this used, however it's only a couple of months old. What's the break in time on a speaker?
Anyone using the M12 with a stock 10?

Like you, I bought mine used; it came with a Weber Silver 10 speaker. It was very smooth sounding and I would have kept it in except for a deal on a used Gold. I have a 12" gold in a Dr Z convertible cab and love it; the 10 " sounds very much like the 12". I have a 10 " Red Fang but haven't tried it in this cab; It's a bit heavier than the Gold.
I'm able to get clean tones very similar to my Maz 18 nr especially with my Strat. It takes time to find all the sounds you can get from this little puppy, don't give it up after a couple of hours, it took me a while to find them.
Hope this helps, Jim

I haven't had a z10 recently enough to comment accurately. The red fang is loud... Has a slight upper mid hump and breaks up a bit late... Similar in feel to a celestion blue. The gold is mid scooped with earlier break up and compression.

Congrats on the new amp, chuckp. I love, love, love my M12. I first got mine as a head (strongly considered a 1×10 combo, though) and have since converted it to a 1×12.. mostly because the 12" speaker I've got is so perfect for it that I just had to permanently marry 'em.
There's just something so awesome about the lower volume, lighter weight, and portability of the M12. First time I tried an M12 it was a 10" combo with the Doc's Z-10" speaker and I really liked it. Having tried many 10" speakers recently (including the R-F 10, Silver Bell, etc.) I think the Doc's Z-10" is probably the best bet for a 10" speaker in the M12.

I forgot to mention I swapped out the 5Y3 rectifier for a GZ34. A lot more "punch", not better, just different in a good way.
