thinking of adding a powered subwoofer to our PA (tis the time for deals)... does moving from a 12 to 15 to 18 really make a difference for basic classic rock? Would wattage not be more important? I'd be matching these with V2 JBL Eon 15" mains.

I really like the QSC subs. That said the JBL EON one would probably work really well for you. (A pair even better) I wouldn't focus so much on the size of the driver. They are all really engineered to work great these days. Subs when set up correctly can dramatically increase the efficiency of your whole rig.
If you don't already have one the other thing that could really help your PA would be to get a speaker management box like the dbx Drive Rack. Really takes the guess work out of crossover settings, EQ-ing for the room, ringing out the PA, even some nice overall compression. Incredible bang for the buck performance wise.

Thanks... The EON sub is designed to match and has a crossover built in... But, getting a better sub and upgrading the mains down the line might make more sense. The QCS stuff isn't cheap. Also looking at Yorkville and EV.

EV stuff is pretty good. I've had some trouble with the electronics on some of the new models. Even with the built in crossover on your JBL's the drive rack thing can be a huge upgrade for you. Huge!

Even with the built in crossover on your JBL's the drive rack thing can be a huge upgrade for you. Huge! I've had good results with the DriveRack also. If you're interested, let me know as I was planning to sell one since the band that used it has gone on hiatus. (I have a second, newer one for another band.)

+1 on the drive rack....helps eq the room for you and you can store the presets and bring up those setting the next time you play there.

Love the QSC KW181s that we use. You can do smaller clubs with just one, or add as many as you need for bigger rooms. They have a built in Crossover at 100Hz. Without some other type of speaker processing or crossover you may have a time getting your existing JBLs to match up though.

Carvin has some pretty good powered subs also. I've had really good luck with them and they are cost effective.
