So I've had the Ray for a little over a month now, and I've been happy with it, but I knew something was missing. Well last night, I figured out what that something was.
Being up here in Canada (particularly in Ottawa) sometimes leaves me with limited access to different gear, particular speakers and cabs. I knew that the V30 that came equipped in my cab wasn't optimal for the Ray, but I had nothing available locally to try to replace it. Wouldn't you know, I emailed my local tech asking if he had either a Celestion or Weber hookup, and he just happened to have a 50 watt alnico blue dog that was in need of a home.
One smoking deal and 10 minutes later, the Ray has officially come alive. It's got more of everything with that speaker. Clarity, punch, definition, character, it's all there in spades.
Who knew that after 20 years of playing I could know so little about the impact of a speaker change...

Yup! A "Blue" speaker and a Ray is an unstoppable combination! The most clarity and chime I have ever heard.

That is the absolute understatement of the century! Make no wonder just about every demo of the Ray I checked out was through a blue, gold, or some combination of the two.
I put the TS808HW through it for a few minutes last night. Now THAT was killer! Makes me want to pull all of my old pedals out of their boxes and see how they fare.

I also found out about the power of a speaker change with my Dr Z amps. Firstly with the Ghia and the with the Monza too. It would be fun to pull out your pedals and play around with them. When the Z inspires follow the path of your leading.

So the Ray handles overdrive pedals well?

So the Ray handles overdrive pedals well? I've had great luck with the Xotic Bb preamp and morning glory in front of the Ray. I think they sound fantastic with the amp.

So the Ray handles overdrive pedals well? So I have had my Ray for 6 months now...best clean amp I have EVER owned. Like all Dr.Z amps...they take whatever pedal you feed it! It takes OD pedals great IMO. I love the way it takes my Timmy pedal! I love it alot with a JHS Morning Glory as well as an Xotic EP booster. All 3 are magic...tonality bliss! I even use an Angry Charlie(JHS) for that "brown sound" plexi like sound. Great amp.

I've had my Ray for.......well, it's a damn long time! I've thrown all manner of OD/boost/distortion pedals (along with everything else) at it and it really seems to handle everything pretty well. I find it really shines with OD pedals the best. I've settled on a Klon copy a local guy made and sold me unfinished for $15, a Dr. Scientist Woofer Wailer and a Suhr Shiba for my "dirts". I find a nice mild to light-medium drive sounds absolutely glorious through the Ray.
It's like I've found my color and now I'm just using different shades of it with different OD pedals. So much so that my pedal collection is composed almost exclusively now of ODs and analogue (and analog-esque) delay pedals.
The Ray, to me, is truly a classic. Just a glorious sounding amp! Enjoy.
