Sorry. Two actually.
1. I had ran a 5751 for years in the PI spot, but recently switched to a 12AX7 based on suggestions found here. I now prefer it! Just swapped and reswapped several 5751s, still like the 12AX7 better. The one in there is the only one I had, a JJ ECC83. My question is, what SHOULD I buy to replace/upgrade this one? I like having backup tubes; the JJ will be that. For this application, I like early crunch and a lot of it, and bright is preferred over bassy.
2. Every EF86 I have ever bought has gone microphonic over 6-12 months. The expensive NOS Tesla EF806S hi grade was the worst, but sounded awesome for 6 months. The EH and the Tung Sol RI Gold Pin have become microphonic too, more subtly, but those little not every time squeaks pop up. How long SHOULD these tubes last? And what is the least likely but not super high dollar one to buy?
I can ask this a hundred different places. I ask here because its for my Z28, and you all haven't steered me wrong yet. Thanks

Tung Sol 12AX7,EH EF86 and a pair of JJ 6V6s just went into my Z-28 ... replacing an old GE 5751, a Dario EF86 and a pair of Groove Tube 6v6s that shipped with the amp back in 2006. Sound-wise I am pretty happy with what I'm hearing - even when I'm playing the guitar .... imho, the 12AX7 brings a lil' bit more fiest-y and flavorful sound I'm not doing much in the way of tour/club dates at this point in life .... mostly the occasional house party and basement playing ..... will let you know how the 'new' tubes stand-up. cheers always, Joel

I'd go for the most recent NOS EF86 you can find-think 80s production or 70s if you can. KcA nos has the good stuff if you're looking. Those cost @ $45 & up plus shipping. The Reissue Tung Sol 6v6s are good and the TAD work well, too. I've had issues w EH and JJ tubes. Any 12ax7 should work and last forever like the GZ34 rectifier tube in the '28. This has not been the case for jj and eh preamp tubes. I've had both fail and they were recent manufacture. My current lineup is a pair of NOS GE 6v6s, asian 12ax7 & recto tubes. They are quiet and solid.

Is the 5751 standard issue? I just opened the back f my Z-28 to see what kind of 12AX7 I was in V2 and was astonished to find an NOS GE 5751. I don't remember putting it ther, but that doesn't mean a thing. During my late Mesa 5:50 days I had bought a bunch of 5751s. So I swapped in a Tung Sol 12AX7 from my stash, and it sounds great. Sweet overdrive starts much lower on the volume dial.
