I recently picked up one of the new Bogner pedals with the Neve-designed transformers.; the low-mid gain Wessex OD.
I was a little luke warm on it through the AST (though I do find the AST somewhat picky about ODs). Before sending it back to Prymaxe via their generous return policy I knew I needed to try it though the Maz 8 as well.
I kinda expected to not be thrilled a second time as the Blue doesn't like every OD either, but hot dang was it great!
The Wessex is subtle but very effective when dialed in. It can shape the EQ of gain in a way to give you an A/B of edge tones when pushing the Maz in its (one of many) sweet spot; for me it's basically EQ & cut @ 11:00, volume & MV at 1:00, guitar controls for everything else and BL as needed.
The Wessex could give me another flavor either thicker or chime-ier than the base tone. Coupled with the EQ bypass I had 6 great tones between the neck and bridge pups on either LP (P90 or regular).
Another Wessex trick that grooves with the Maz is the "enhance mode". Not sure how this sounds in a live mix, but alone I get a whole new level of 3D detail. I really came to appreciate this at home when setting the amp really low: it makes things sound bigger and richer without excessive volume. It really eliminates the low volume compromise.
Anyway, check one out with a Maz if you get a chance. It's really quite versatile and very complementary to the Maz voice and range.
