OK, so I had this extra Z 1 x 12 convertible cab sitting empty, and a new-ish Celestion Vintage 30 speaker sitting on my bench. "Why not?" I thought, so I put that puppy in there and decided to A/B it against my other Z 1 x 12 convertible cab with a Celestion Gold.
I remember reading somewhere Doc saying the V 30 (which I usually hate) came within a hair of matching the Cel Gold with the Therapy.
When oh when will we ever start to listen??
Brothers, after some very extensive A/B 'ing, I'm honestly not sure I could tell you which is which.
When the amp is tuned / voiced for the V 30 it sounds just awesome. Switching over to the Gold with these settings, the Gold sounds slightly dark and dull.
When the amp is tweaked / voiced for the Gold (which also sounds awesome), switching over to the V 30 makes it sound a tad bright and sterile.
In other words, it's all in how you set the controls. I honestly could be completely satisfied with the much cheaper V-30 in the 1 x 12 Conv cab with the Therapy......
Whaddda you know.....Maybe ole Doc knows what he's tawkin 'bout!!!!!

I was digging the Creamback with Therapy this evening. Have to try some additional speakers besides that and an EV. Maybe the old Z best....

I was playing my Therapy at our last practice. I told my other guitar player I was wanting to try a CG. he then said ,you really think you can improve that tone? Didn't take much convincing i was happy with the V30

Mike, have you tried the Therapy with a Gold and if so which do you prefer? I took out a Gold from my Z 1X12 and put in a Creamback for using with the Remedy. Luckily I've held on to the Gold and have in on hand in case I need it.

I had a Gold in my Convertible 1x12 and put the Vintage 30 in because the Gold belongs to my buddy, I didn't notice much change at all in the tone of the Therapy with the V30 (sounds great with either). I would definitely recommend the Vintage 30 for the Therapy.

Hmmmm, Therapy w/ V30 ..... then again, I still got the 210 cab ..... oh right, I also have a Y-cable ...... not that I'm thinkin' of what stackin' some speakers to share some Therapy with the rest of the neighborhood would do ..... cheers always, Joel gotta remind myself that patience is a virtue when seeking Therapy

Interesting thread......... I'm thinking of trying out a V30 as it's affordable, and the fact the Doc prefers it is a no brainer for me. A Gold on the other hand, is a serious acquisition...........

In other words, it's all in how you set the controls. what settings were you using with the v30 maddog? OK fellas, here ya go. But there are 3 really important things to realize/remember:
1) I always use a specially EQ 'd clean boost I made from a kit. It stays "ON" almost all the time. It was "ON" during this testing. It adds some girth and volume, as well as the EQ. So you might need to add some grunt ("V" knob).
2) I replaced the V1 tube (12AX7) with a 5751. More clean headroom, a tad less volume.
3) I was playing a Collings SoCo guitar for this session. NOT a Strat, tele, or LP. Think of it as a 335 type semi-hollow body with T.V. Jones Filtertron pups.
With these three above-stated conditions, the likelihood these settings will ring yer bell is low. BUT, the purpose of this thread is NOT to rave over settings I found. It is to let you know (just like Doc said) the V-30 is probably tied for 1st place for "THE" speaker for my therapy. It can get so close to sounding like the Gold, I don't think I could pass a blindfold test. (Note: I've not yet tried a Creamback). These settings were not necessarily for band or recording situations; I was alone in my jam shack playing at a nice, kicking volume.
Here's the settings I used on the gold:

You may just have answered THE burning question on my lips, Lee..... the Mids. I'm running my Mid maxed through my G12 65, and although I am normally not a fan of too much mid, I LOVE the mids in the Therapy, especially for the contemporary / indie rock stuff we do....... Now that I've seen how you've pulled back the mids on the V30, it looks like I'll be doing the same, albeit still higher than yours, when I get my V30 (just ordered). I will be interested to hear the difference between the G12 65 and the V30 - I will also have to get another cab to house these "spare" speakers! (an Eminence Governor and now a G12 65 by the looks of things - I think I'll just sell the Governor: too dark for my taste)

Yeah Pete.... I bought my V 30 used from Jon EZG Biscuit, but it's not broken in yet. Still has a LOT of upper mids and will for a while, I understand. Also, my clean boost adds some mids, so there might not be as much difference in our respective tmb settings as it appears.....

Yes, I hear they take a LOT of breaking in.......... and at 100dB, it will be noticeably louder than my G12 65 (97dB), so that will be a challenge. I may have to roll out the BL on this amp after all...............

I'll really be anxious to hear your opinion of the (comparison of the ) V-30 and the G12-65...

I've always steered clear of speakers which change considerably on break in; are too sensitive; and take a long time to break in............ I guess I just scored a hat trick of own goals with the V30

I feel our patience with the V-30 will be well-rewarded with great tone, Pete. I'm not sure how much Jon played mine before I got it. I think it was in a new cab he bought and he gave it a quick spin and pulled it. I'm gonna put my cab with the gold in the closet and only use the V-30 equipped cab for a few months. I already like it...just have to do some knob turning.
Righty-O on the "hat trick" but there might not be many yanks who know what that means unless they're soccer (excuse me, "football") players!!!!

I'm not sure how the volume compares but the WGS equivalent to the V30 may be worth a try (veteran 30 I think?). I remember Doc saying he had a bunch of WGS speakers to try out, maybe he can give us his thoughts on them. But the WGS is priced right, so I'm thinking I'll try one.

The WGS Vintage 30 copy is an excellent speaker. It is a touch smoother out of the box, they did a great job with this one.
