And headed this way from GA. My Therapy's on its way to a Z-bro in Colorado, and a brand new red M12 head is headed up to WI as we speak. I liked the Therapy a lot--in some ways a beefier version of the Maz 18 given the MV and B/M/T tone stack--but I realized that I'm just not a straight-in guy right now, and I think that's really the Therapy's strength. Also, I've got the "big" amp thing pretty well covered with the EZG, which I loved right out of the box, and which ain't going nowhere. What I wanted, I realized, was a clean platform for a few great dirt pedals, small club/practice friendly, also good for at-home noodling, which is mostly what I do now. Will I regret selling the Therapy? Maybe--but if it gets to the point where I want/need/GAS-for another one, I suspect Doc will keep making them awhile yet.

Im torn right now between buying an M12 or a Z28. I really like the specs of the M12 but Im afraid it wouldn't be loud or big enough for gigging situations?

I have a Z28 that is too loud (not a huge issue) but also not quite enough high end for what I do. I had an M12 for a bit, but had to sell it (economics)... have another now in route. Should be interesting and I'll be happy to share thoughts when I can put them side by side.
I'm inspired by someone (sorry, can't remember who) that said they use a zwreck for most gigs and the M12 for low volume. I'm hoping that is a solid combination for what I'm doing as well.

I would think an M-12 with efficient speakers (Alnico Blue) would be plenty loud! That's going to be my next rig ;-)

I use a Brakelite with my Z-28 on 2-3 clicks. Great tones at reasonable volumes. I have one in my Maz 18 studio, too--2 clicks for small gigs, 3 for practice, typically. Don't be afraid to attenuate! I even used a BL with the Therapy so I could open up the MV a bit--some great tones there. My guess is that for small clubs, the M12 with a Gold or other efficient speaker plus OD pedal plus boost for solos would be plenty loud--we're talking Z-watts, after all!

Good luck with your M12, Jon. I hope you love it as I do mine.
Be sure to use your ears (and not your eyes) when dialing in the EQ. I've ended up at 1:30 Bass and 10:30 Treble—very much UNlike my other EF86 Z-amps. Also, this amp seems to use "regular" watts, not "Z-watts." So, an inefficient Greenback-style speaker will get you really nice home volumes with no attenuator needed; whereas a Gold will probably get you nice club volumes but still be friends with the sound guy (again, with no attenuator).

I run my M12 with a Gold. It loves the gold/blue/creamback in my opinion.
I think it sounds best in the low setting with my pedals. Plenty of volume available. The key I think is to have a good clean boost somewhere on your board that can hit your front end pretty good. My lizard Leg Draconis in conjunction with my OD really gives me lots of volume.
If I had to guess, I would say that it is about 80-90% of the volume available from a maz Jr.

Great to know. I'm optimistic regarding my additional treble needs (beyond the z28). @jefferson, I've taken to running a klone (klon clone) at the end of my pedal chain as a clean most nearly full time, but have another early on.

My experience with the M12 is that it seems a little "quiet," but I think that's because it stays, by design, pretty clean until V is cranked. Also seems that the volume does not increase as rapidly as most Zs as you up the knob. That too likely is by design for an amp that is a pedal platform.
Looking forward to your views, Jon. I think it will be a good fit for your needs.

Your experience has uncovered the same traits in the M12 as my experience has. It's a wonderful amp because of these traits, not in spite of them.

Dr Z achieved brilliantly, as usual, what he set out to do.

My neighbors--and my ears--will be grateful for an amp that's "a little quiet."

^^^ You'll still be able to annoy neighbors: It's not that quiet when cranked and on the hi input setting
