The Z28 is a bit darker and has more mids and lots of girth to it...if that makes sense, not a bad thing at all imho. That's what I like about it and why many say it has somewhat of a brownface Deluxe\Princeton voicing with the right speaker. Darker and thicker than a 6V6 blackface and clearer than a 6V6 tweed with the same raunchy breakup when the tone knobs are past 12. The bottom end holds together like a big bottle 6L6. Just add a bit of reverb and\or trem and it has the best of everything in one tidy little package.
Edited to add that I recognize up front the brownface era Fender\ Z-28 sound is not everyone's' shot of Jim Beam. The Z-28 has weathered the storms of my changing tastes in amps over the years but who knows what the future may bring.

In answer to my original question, after a couple of days I would have to say "YES I would miss my Z28" it is a much bigger sounding amp than the Therapy.

If your Z28 sounds bigger than your Therapy, your Z28 and/or Therapy sound very different than mine! Not to take anything away from the 28, and I loved my little Z28 and that's well documented here, but there is no way in he\_ \_ my 28 sounds bigger than the mighty Therapy..... You may have a problem somewhere.....

I like the Therapy and between that and the Remedy I am pretty good. I usually have one amp in a "rotation" spot so I can try other amps. The Z28 is now in that spot just because I want to give the Therapy more time. But I can easily see either keeping the Z28 or getting another.

In answer to my original question, after a couple of days I would have to say "YES I would miss my Z28" it is a much bigger sounding amp than the Therapy. I can see what you mean there. "Bigger" wouldn't be the word I would use, but I think I understand - there's a LOT of full bodied head room in a Z28 thanks to that EF86, and very little forgiveness! It's very immediate. The Therapy is more forgiving, and yes, it gets dirtier, quicker, but try the Therapy with the MV up high (3 o'clock or more) and bring the V up to taste. That's the spot where I get more Z28 like tones, and where the differences between the EF86 and 12AX7s shows up - once there, it's all personal taste My Therapy can go way beyond that in terms of grit, grind and harmonic richness, which what I want. That's not everyone's cup of tea, and the Z28 is a stellar amp for sure!

This amp is making me forget all of my other Z's... still have two others here and they never get turned on any more.

Actually I figured it out last night...The Therapy NEEDS to be turned up. The best way to describe it is like it has a "power-band" like a 2 stroke motorcycle (lol). Once you get to that magical balance between Master and Volume it comes alive. I wasn't finding it before last night and wasn't feeling the love, now I really do "get it". Also to my ears, the Treble needs to be kicked up quite a bit. Now I see that it has the cajones and dynamics I was missing. The Z28 is a no-brainer (dead simple) but the Therapy can sound much bigger than I was giving it credit for earlier. I also replaced the stock rectifier with a JJ GZ34 I had laying around and put a Tung-Sol (12AX7) in V.1 What a difference a day makes! I was really ready to return it yesterday now that I understand just how interactive it is and have heard it sing I can't wait to play it again today.

I love keeping the Master higher than 1 (o'clock). It only comes down when someone complains

yeah markT it is a learning curve for sure. I felt the same way when I first got the Z28 (wtf?) Then I realized the amps respond to how you play (dynamics) my tone was dark and muffled then I went to work on my picking technique and making small adjustments here and there and it became much more lively.
I've learned now not to judge an amp so quickly, it takes time to really figure it out...still learning obviously.

The thing, the very SPECIAL thing, about Z amps, is that they are like finely tuned instruments........ you have to step up to the plate and learn how to "play" them to get the most out of them. That's one of the MANY things I love about them!! They are an integral part of my sound, not just something I plug into.........
