What is the difference between a 12AX7 and a 12AX7A pre-amp tube (size?)?
Can anyone suggest a good (NOS) 12AX7A pre-amp tube?
Apologies if anyone noticed that this was posted in the "Ask the Experts" thread but I thought I might get some more opinions in this thread.
Thanks,
Tom

In the past the "A" was a more highly selected tube and the 7025 was the most highly selected. If you want some great NOS choices hit www.kcanostubes.comChoice at that point is your personal preference and taste.

Thanks. Could you confirm that for the pre-amp I don't need them balanced or matched?

Thanks. Could you confirm that for the pre-amp I don't need them balanced or matched? The only place I use a balanced tube is in the phase inverter slot of certain amps that use a modern phase inverter design. In a tweed champ, deluxe, super or bandmaster of this era or a tolex era Princeton, only one side of the tube is used to drive the output tubes so a balanced tube yields nothing special.
