My M12 arrived with a busted rectifier tube so ordered the "best" (most expensive) one that KCANOS had, which is an NOS RCA. So, I have not played my M12 with the stock rectifier tube that I guess is probably a JJ. Has anyone else swapped out rectifier tubes and had any results good or bad? I love the sound with the RCA in there but I just wonder how different it is from the stock tube.

I like a NOS rectifier as a replacement for the stock one. YMMV

I just replaced my 5y3 rectifier with a chinese Electron 5ar4 rectifier that I got from the the good Dr. Wow, what a difference! It is so much more punchier and tight which is what I like.

A rectifier tube does not really change the tone. The reason to buy an NOS is to get a very long life out of the right rectifier. I'm not an expert on the new ones, but I've been told that the JJ isn't a true 5Y3. You can change the sag and head room by changing the rectifier as it can increase or decrease the doc voltage within the circuit. Mike at KCNOS has a page on his site with the range listed and recommendations... Be cautious as you head down that path. Rectifiers tend to either work, or they don't.

I have not swapped out the stock rectifier tube in my M12; however, I can confirm that it came new with a JJ 5Y3 S from the factory.

This rectifier swap was suggested by the guys in the repair dept. at Dr.Z if I wanted to try it.

I put in a Brimar I think. I checked with Dr. Z before I did it. Absolutely no problems and sounds great.
