I'm loving my new Therapy amp. I just sold my Z28 to pay for it. I loved the Z28 also. Just wondering what would happen if you change the 6L6s to 6v6s in any 6L6 amp, not just the Therapy. Would it just be lower power or less low end, something like that? And would it harm the Therapy to use 6v6s? Just wondering. Not brave enough to try it just yet.

6V6's are designed to run at a much lower plate voltage than 6L6's.

You can put a medium range 6V6 in the Therapy in place of the 6L6 without a problem because it's cathode biased. As a matter of fact there was a post here where the Doc said EL 34s, KT77s 5881s, or any other octal beam tube with a 7AC pin configuration will work. In other amps, if they are cathode biased, they will usually work, but no guarantees. If it's a fixed bias amp you can usually get the bias set, but the tubes will burn up faster. Had a Mark IIB Mesa in the 80s and ran 6V6s in it for a while. Randall himself said that it wouldn't hurt the amp and that even though you couldn't adjust the bias it was cold enough they would work. It sounded great, but burned them out fast.

Thanks for the info. It's just good to know that I have that option with the Therapy.

Doc also noted that JJ was about the only 6V6 that could handle the high plate voltage.

Has anyone tried 6V6 w/ a lower voltage rectifier?
I'm curious what the plate voltage is w/ a 5AR4 as well.
